India needs to move across a broad front of domains that all contribute to comprehensive national power, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said while presenting a compelling vision for India's role in tackling the pressing geoeconomic challenges of our time. Addressing a distinguished audience of policymakers, experts, and students at the prestigious 8th Asia Economic Dialogue held in Pune on February 29, 2024, EAM Jaishankar said India needs to build deep national strengths that will drive the transition towards a developed economy and a leading power. The Global Challenges Triad EAM Jaishankar summed up the three predominant challenges that encapsulate the current geo-economic landscape. The first challenge is the vulnerability of the global supply chain due to economic hardwiring created by globalization, leading to a dangerous dependence on a limited number of suppliers. Introducing greater resilience and reliability is central to de-risking the global economy. The second challenge lies in technological advancements, with the digital revolution transforming every facet of our lives. The digital era demands more trust and transparency, considering its intrusive nature. The final challenge is market over-concentration and dominance, often exacerbated by unpredictability and opaqueness. According to EAM Jaishankar, this is a serious issue for the Global South due to dependence on global supply chains. Greater International Cooperation Needed "There are no easy answers, nor a limited number of them. To create a safer, more secure, and cooperative world, greater international cooperation is essential," EAM Jaishankar emphasized. For India to achieve comprehensive national power, it requires an upgrade of skills, a skills and talent-promoting environment, easier business operations, modern infrastructure, and robust manufacturing to lay the foundation for technology development. India aims to become the third-largest economy by the decade's end and must build deep national strengths to achieve its goals and drive the transition towards a developed economy and a leading power. The Modi government's vision involves leveraging the 'Amrit Kaal' era for this transition. EAM Jaishankar's speech at the Asia Economic Dialogue 2024 not only addressed geoeconomic challenges but also outlined India's proactive role in shaping a resilient, secure, and cooperative global economic order. Pune, with its industrial legacy, was a fitting setting for this vision. Though the journey ahead is complex, strategic vision and international collaboration can pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous global economy.
