Three Security Personnel Killed in Karachi Attack
At least three members of the paramilitary Rangers were killed following an attack in Karachi's Gulistan-i-Jauhar area, according to police reports. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when a group of heavily armed assailants stormed a Rangers facility after a vehicle laden with explosives was driven into the building's entrance. Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho confirmed that the assault resulted in the deaths of four attackers as well.
Witnesses reported a significant explosion at the scene, although initial assessments from police were not definitive regarding the occurrence of an explosion. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed his concerns regarding the reported explosion and subsequent gunfire, calling for a detailed report from authorities.
In the wake of the attack, security forces implemented a lockdown around the Mosamiat Chowrangi area, where the firefight took place. A concerted clearance operation was initiated, involving members from the Special Security Unit, the Anti-Terrorist Force, and other Rangers personnel.
The Edhi Foundation, known for its emergency response efforts across Pakistan, noted that at least two individuals were injured during the attack and subsequently hospitalised.
Claiming responsibility for the incident, an affiliate of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), stated that nine attackers were involved in the operation. It is crucial to highlight that the Pakistani Taliban differs from the Taliban in Afghanistan, which regained control in 2021.
This assault is part of a broader trend of increasing violence against security personnel in various regions of Pakistan, where armed groups continue to pose a significant threat to stability and safety.
