Wang Yi Urges India and China to Renew Dialogue Mechanisms
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi calls for India and China to expedite stalled dialogues during a meeting with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Beijing's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, recently advocated for the acceleration of stalled dialogue mechanisms between India and China during a meeting in New Delhi. This discussion took place on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting on June 22, 2026. Wang Yi emphasised the importance of fostering exchanges in various fields, including trade and finance, between the two nations.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that Wang Yi called for mutual respect regarding each country's core interests and urged both parties to manage sensitive topics tactfully. This includes appropriately positioning the ongoing boundary issue, which has historically influenced the larger context of bilateral relations.

Wang Yi’s comments come upon the heels of recent remarks by Xu Feihong, the Chinese Ambassador to India. Xu noted that many of the nearly 50 government-to-government dialogue frameworks currently in existence between the two countries are inactive. He described this lack of dialogue mechanisms as a significant setback in China-India relations.

In the same meeting, Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser to India, reiterated the importance of stable and predictable relations to foster trust and understanding between the two neighbours. Both representatives reviewed recent developments and acknowledged a gradual return to normalization in their relations.

However, the process of normalisation has faced difficulties, with essential actions such as the resumption of direct flights between the countries experiencing extensive delays. Yet, preparations are in progress for Doval's forthcoming visit to Beijing, where further discussions under the Special Representatives mechanism are expected.

During the talks, Wang Yi highlighted the cooperation required to enhance bilateral relations and mentioned that frameworks designed to facilitate such cooperation had to be responsibly managed. He noted that the China-India boundary issue should not hinder overall diplomatic relations.

Wang stated, "Exchanges between China and India in various fields have gradually resumed, indicating that communication and cooperation are moving forward in a systematic manner. The border regions are currently maintaining peace and stability, a result of careful management by both sides."

He further insisted on the necessity of a unified approach to prevent domestic misunderstandings and to solidify public support for improved relations.

As China and India continue to be pivotal players in the Global South, Wang Yi articulated the significance of the BRICS grouping in advocating for multipolarity on the global stage. He stressed the collective responsibility of BRICS nations to safeguard developing countries' rights and drive international order in a more equitable direction.

The dialogue between the respective leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and President Xi Jinping of China, has historically focused on viewing their relationship as a partnership rather than a rivalry. Doval reiterated this sentiment, expressing a commitment from India to approach relations with China from a strategic standpoint, aiming to address differences while advancing mutual interests.
