Allegations of Financial Misconduct Surround Ayodhya Ram Temple Trust
Ayodhya's Ram Temple trust faces grave allegations of financial irregularities and theft, prompting official investigations and community outrage.

Allegations of financial misconduct have surfaced concerning the trust overseeing the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, leading to significant discontent among local supporters. The temple was constructed on the site of the Babri Masjid, which was demolished in 1992 as part of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. This movement had played a crucial role in the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Indian politics.

Dharam Das, a prominent figure linked to the temple's history, publicly expressed his frustrations earlier this week, stating, “The prime minister needs to give this his attention.” His concerns centre around accusations that cash and jewellery donations made by devotees have been misappropriated by staff associated with the temple trust.

The trust, established by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020 following a Supreme Court ruling, is now under scrutiny as it grapples with these serious allegations. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Uttar Pradesh government, has initiated an inquiry into the claims of financial irregularities. However, no formal charges have yet been filed.

Recent comments from local leaders indicate a growing discontent. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cautioned against remarks that might upset the sentiments of devotees, yet many within the community are voicing their anger. Local BJP members and volunteers from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are similarly concerned about the trust’s integrity and transparency.

Vinay Katiyar, a senior leader of the Bajrang Dal and former member of parliament, warned that those responsible for these issues within the trust “will bear the consequences.” An insider from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has suggested that these allegations could damage the reputation of the Sangh Parivar, particularly among the Bahujan communities, known for their significant electoral influence.

Since its formation, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust has faced criticism for its management decisions. Reports have emerged regarding questionable land transactions that have benefited individuals connected to the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. As the scrutiny of the trust continues, dissatisfaction is brewing among factions that feel sidelined by its operations.

Dharam Das has attributed some of the concerns to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, an influential organisation in the Ram Temple movement, stating, “The VHP always wants to capture temples.” His criticisms reflect a broader frustration within the community, as access to the temple and its resources appear to be increasingly restricted.

The current investigation may further escalate tensions among the various factions involved in the temple's governance. With the local community and political leaders calling for accountability, the trust's future functionality and credibility are now in precarious jeopardy.

In this context, the investigation led by the Special Investigation Team remains ongoing, with expectations of further developments in the coming weeks.
