US-Iran Diplomacy: Meeting in Qatar Announced by Trump Amid Tensions
President Trump announces a planned meeting with Iran in Qatar, while Tehran's response raises questions about the status of negotiations.

US President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with Iranian representatives scheduled for Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, despite ongoing military tensions in the Gulf region. This announcement comes after a weekend marked by aerial skirmishes between the two nations.

Trump posted on social media, asserting, "IRAN HAS REQUESTED A MEETING. IT WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW IN DOHA!" However, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi cast doubt on this plan, indicating that technical discussions related to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had not been planned for the week.

Gharibabadi clarified that while there are ongoing consultations with Qatar about the implementation of prior agreements, reports suggesting imminent technical discussions in Doha could not be confirmed. The contradictory statements from Washington and Tehran have prompted speculation about whether developments could have occurred after Gharibabadi's comments.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the US negotiating team, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will travel to Qatar for high-level discussions. Leavitt mentioned that technical discussions would take place alongside these negotiations.

Earlier this month, the US and Iran had reached an interim deal primarily aimed at addressing Tehran's nuclear programme. That agreement initiated a 60-day negotiation period intended to resolve contentious issues between the two nations. Nonetheless, the situation has been complicated by Israel’s military actions in Lebanon and Iran’s assertions of control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global oil shipments.

The MoU's first clause calls for an uninterrupted ceasefire in Lebanon, ensuring territorial integrity. A separate US agreement has been set to facilitate Israeli withdrawal contingent on the disarmament of Hezbollah across the region. Meanwhile, Iran has maintained a hard stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz, reportedly launching attacks on vessels perceived to operate outside its control.

In response to Iranian actions, the US has retaliated with targeted strikes against Iranian positions near the waterway, leading to further escalation. However, amid the cycle of attacks, diplomatic activity appears to be persisting. Leavitt highlighted that the US remains committed to upholding the ceasefire while warning that any aggression against commercial vessels or US interests would prompt a retaliatory response.

On the economic front, Trump expressed satisfaction with a drop in oil prices, following the interim agreement that lifted Tehran's blockade on the Strait of Hormuz and eased US sanctions on Iranian energy exports. He noted that the current average price for gasoline in the US has fallen to $3.86 per gallon, a decrease from earlier highs of $4.56 in May 2026.

The average price of oil futures has also experienced fluctuations as a result of the agreement, trading at approximately $69 per barrel, which Trump lauded as a success that could resonate positively with voters in the lead-up to November elections. This situation underscores the delicate balance of diplomacy and military action as the US and Iran navigate their complex relationship amidst ongoing regional instability.
