Indian Delegation to Attend Ayatollah Khamenei's Funeral in Iran
Bihar Governor Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (retired) and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita are expected to head the Indian delegation attending the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Sources familiar with the arrangements informed The Hindu about the delegation's likely composition.
Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in strikes reportedly conducted by Israeli and American forces on February 28, 2026. The funeral ceremonies will take place in Iran from July 3 to July 9. While invitations were extended to various foreign dignitaries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be part of the Indian delegation due to prior commitments in Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand between July 6 and July 11.
The delegation will participate in events being held in both the capital, Tehran, and Qom, a notable holy city. However, the final burial will occur in Mashhad, another significant pilgrimage site in northeast Iran. The choice of Mashhad for the burial signifies Khamenei's esteemed status following his assassination.
The selection of Governor Hasnain and Minister Margherita for this important diplomatic assignment has elicited criticism from some former diplomats. Talmiz Ahmad, who served as India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, expressed his disappointment regarding the representation, highlighting that Khamenei was highly regarded in India and had previously interacted with all Indian Prime Ministers over the past four decades. He underscored the need for India to navigate its diplomatic relationships in the region with greater sensitivity.
Commentators have suggested that the funeral represents a significant opportunity for India to reassess its West Asia policy, pointing out that the choice of representatives indicates a potential underestimation of the event's significance. Notably, India's former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar represented the country at the funeral of President Ebrahim Raisi in Tehran in May 2024, following his fatal helicopter crash.
