A Ukrainian drone attack on Wildberries warehouses results in fatalities and injuries, impacting Russian logistics and economy.

Eight individuals have lost their lives and 62 others sustained injuries following drone attacks on two warehouses of Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, according to reports from Russian officials. Most of the casualties occurred at a facility in Tambov, located approximately 475 kilometres southeast of Moscow, where seven people were killed and 25 injured. Another warehouse in Elektrostal, within the Moscow region, reported one fatality and 37 injuries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked that the strikes targeted significant logistics hubs supplying components for drone and navigation equipment production, which have been subject to international sanctions. He also indicated that Ukraine's military operations included assaults on various locations, including the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea, and Russian-held Crimea.

Eyewitness accounts and unverified footage from the scenes indicated flames and thick plumes of smoke emanating from the warehouses, with numerous workers attempting to escape the chaos. The assaults appeared to have begun during the night, with videos showing injured personnel fleeing amid ongoing explosions. One clip captured the destructive force of the strikes as walls crumbled under intense fire.

Zelensky emphasised that these actions were retribution for ongoing Russian strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. He noted that overnight, multiple Russian attacks across Ukraine resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals.

Wildberries, often likened to Amazon in the Russian market, has been described as a crucial part of the nation's logistics system. As reported by Forbes Russia, the merged RWB group, which includes Wildberries and an advertising company, was valued at approximately $12.6 billion in 2026. Serhii Kuzan, chairman of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre, highlighted that the Wildberries platform has been exploited by Russian volunteers for purchasing military gear. He asserted that targeting these warehouses primarily aims to disrupt logistics and the flow of essential goods to the Russian military.

Kuzan further stated, "The collateral damage from such strikes could also have a serious impact on the Russian economy, as well as a psychological effect on Russian society and, likely, on continued support for the war."

In response to the drone attacks, Evgeniy Pervyshov, the governor of the Tambov region, stated that it was a "terrible night" for both Russia and the Wildberries company, confirming that all seven casualties were from the night shift. He noted the interception of 28 drones intended for the strike, with injuries mainly attributed to shrapnel.

Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, reported that out of those injured in Elektrostal, eight were in a serious condition. He added that 48 drones were intercepted across the region overnight. A drone also struck an oil depot, marking a significant incident of the evening.

Emergency services remain on-site as efforts continue to manage the ongoing situation. President Zelensky verified that Ukraine targeted an oil facility in the operation, as the nation escalates its long-range drone attacks aimed at critical Russian energy infrastructure, resulting in significant fuel shortages.

Earlier in the month, Ukrainian authorities claimed that nearly 43% of Russia's refining capacity had been compromised due to such attacks, although this figure remains unverified by independent sources. Ukraine considers Russian energy facilities legitimate targets due to their role in funding the country’s military operations since the invasion escalated in February 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged the impact of Ukrainian strikes on fuel supplies and has initiated legislation aiming to bolster domestic fuel production. This event marks a continuing pattern of retaliatory strikes as the ongoing conflict persists, with both nations engaging in aggressive military actions against each other.
