Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max Set for Launch with Variable Aperture Camera
Apple is gearing up for the launch of its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, expected in September 2026. This eagerly awaited release is generating significant buzz among tech enthusiasts as details continue to emerge. The company has remained tight-lipped regarding specifics, but leaks suggest some notable upgrades are on the horizon.
According to reports, the keynote unveiling could take place on either 8 September or 9 September, with 9 September appearing more likely. This timing would conveniently follow the US Labour Day holiday, providing international journalists an opportunity to attend. The retail availability of the new devices is anticipated for 18 September.
This year, Apple may adopt a staggered release strategy, potentially reserving the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max for the September event, while delaying the launch of the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and the next iPhone Air until early 2027.
Regarding design, insiders report that the iPhone 18 Pro series will retain the familiar flat-edged shape and triple-camera configuration. However, a more polished rear panel is expected to be introduced, reducing the pronounced two-tone aesthetic observed in the current models. Leaked information indicates that the camera module may expand in size, with the Pro variants potentially becoming thicker to accommodate larger batteries and an advanced vapour chamber cooling system.
In terms of aesthetics, a fresh Dark Cherry hue is anticipated to serve as the standout colour, complemented by options such as Light Blue, Silver, and Dark Grey. However, final colour decisions may remain subject to change before the official launch.
The display sizes are projected to remain unchanged, with 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. Significant alterations may occur at the top of the display, with suggestions of a smaller Dynamic Island. Some sources believe that Apple is working towards integrating some Face ID components beneath the display, although there is speculation that the cut-out might simply be minimised rather than eliminated entirely.
Powering these new models will be the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC's cutting-edge 2-nanometre technology. This advancement is aimed at enhancing performance, improving gaming experiences, optimising battery efficiency, and bolstering on-device artificial intelligence capabilities.
Battery life is expected to be a prominent feature in this release, with reports indicating that the iPhone 18 Pro Max may contain a battery ranging from 5,391 mAh to 5,567 mAh. Variations in battery capacity may also occur based on market demands and SIM configurations.
The camera system is set to undergo significant upgrades, with the Pro models retaining a triple 48-megapixel setup. Notably, there are indications that the main camera may introduce a variable-aperture lens, which would grant users enhanced control over depth of field and performance in low-light settings. Additional improvements may include a brighter telephoto lens and an upgraded 24-megapixel front-facing camera.
Moreover, the new models are expected to feature Apple’s C2 modem, offering superior connectivity speeds and efficiency. Expanded satellite connectivity capabilities are also rumoured, going beyond just emergency messaging functions.
The iPhone 18 Pro series will debut with iOS 27, which is anticipated to feature Apple's latest virtual assistant enhancements among other updates. Pricing is a focal point of conversation, with speculation suggesting that manufacturing costs for the A20 chip and upgraded components may lead to price increases. In India, potential price rises for the Pro models could add approximately Rs 5,000, setting expected starting prices at around Rs 1,39,900 for the iPhone 18 Pro and Rs 1,54,900 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. As excitement builds in the lead-up to the launch, tech aficionados await further official announcements from Apple.
