TMC Accuses BJP of Electoral Fraud Ahead of West Bengal Vote Counting
West Bengal's TMC alleges BJP's misconduct, opens protests. ECI denies claims as political tensions rise ahead of counting.

A political controversy has emerged in West Bengal as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) of electoral misconduct ahead of the vote counting scheduled for May 4. The TMC shared a video on X, alleging that CCTV footage revealed ballot boxes being opened without the presence of party representatives, indicating serious electoral fraud. The party further claimed that these actions were carried out in collaboration with the ECI.

In an emphatic statement, the TMC argued that attempts to manipulate the electoral process had escalated from voter intimidation and the removal of names from voter rolls to the tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs). They described the situation as indicative of desperation, stating, "This is the murder of democracy in broad daylight."

The allegations have provoked immediate responses, with senior TMC officials Shashi Panja and Kunal Ghosh staging a protest outside the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to visit the site to assess the unfolding situation, having already arrived at the Sakhawat Memorial Girls' High School, where ballots for the Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency are stored.

In response to the TMC's accusations, the Election Commission of India categorically denied any wrongdoing. The ECI affirmed that all seven strong rooms located at the Kshudiram Anushilan Kendra had been properly secured following the conclusion of polling. Their statement clarified that the sealing process took place with the oversight of candidates, election agents, and a General Observer, aimed at preserving transparency during the storage of the polled EVMs.

Manoj Agarwal, the Chief Executive Officer of the ECI, reiterated the integrity of the process, stating that the strongroom remains sealed and secure from any unauthorised access. Additionally, a separate strongroom was established for postal ballots to further ensure their protection.

As tensions rise ahead of the counting day, Chief Minister Banerjee has called on party members to maintain a constant presence at counting centres. She rejected exit poll predictions that suggest a potential loss for the TMC, asserting that her party is on track to achieve a decisive victory, anticipating more than 226 seats in the assembly.

Banerjee has commented on the disparity between exit poll results and actual outcomes in previous elections, particularly highlighting the 2021 elections. She also suggested that these projections were part of a media narrative orchestrated by the BJP to demoralise TMC supporters, claiming intelligence inputs indicated a politically motivated effort by the BJP to influence public perception.

The TMC leader cautioned party workers to remain vigilant regarding the handling of EVMs, specifically during their transportation from strong rooms to counting halls, alleging a potential plan to swap the machines. Banerjee's warnings come as various exit polls have indicated a competitive race, with some showing the BJP gaining ground, potentially altering West Bengal's political landscape.

West Bengal recently conducted elections in two phases, on April 23 and 29, achieving a turnout exceeding 90% amid substantial security measures. The BJP framed the high voter participation as a sign of widespread demand for change, or "poriborton." While several surveys support the BJP's momentum, others imply a tight competition or even a lead for the TMC, with the definitive outcome set to emerge on May 4.
