Tata Motors Launches ₹9,000 Crore JLR Manufacturing Facility in Tamil Nadu
Tata Motors has inaugurated a new Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) manufacturing plant in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, with an investment of ₹9,000 crore. The facility was officially opened on February 9, 2026, by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran.
During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted Tamil Nadu's competitive edge in attracting investments on a global scale. He noted that the state has evolved to compete with nations rather than just other Indian states. 'Global investors are well aware that the Tamil Nadu government is committed to delivering on its promises,' he remarked.
The newly constructed plant, which occupies 470 acres, has been completed in a significantly short time frame of just 16 months following the laying of its foundation in September 2024. This rapid development showcases the efficiency of business operations in Tamil Nadu, according to Chief Minister Stalin. He cited the recent establishment of the Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast's plant in Thoothukudi, which was also completed in a similar time span.
Stalin elaborated on the favorable business environment in Tamil Nadu, mentioning the state's strong infrastructure, human resources, and transparency in governance. He also expressed the government’s commitment to further simplify the business landscape through initiatives such as an upcoming conversion conclave showcasing various business schemes.
N. Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., viewed the opening of the facility as a pivotal step towards positioning India as a leader in sustainable manufacturing. He stated, 'This marks a significant milestone in our journey towards boosting India’s capabilities in future-ready manufacturing.'
The Ranipet plant is projected to have a production capacity of 250,000 vehicles annually over the next five to seven years, catering to both domestic and international markets. It is anticipated to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The inauguration included a ceremonial unveiling of a bust-sized statue of Ratan Tata, a tribute to the legacy of the Tata Group in the region. The event was attended by various government officials and industry leaders, further emphasising the collaborative efforts between the state and the Tata Group in fostering industrial development.
Overall, the establishment of this plant reinforces Tata Motors' long-standing presence in Tamil Nadu, enhancing the state's reputation as a hub for automotive manufacturing and innovation.
