San Diego Mosque Shooting Investigated as Hate Crime
A shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego resulted in three fatalities, igniting investigations into radicalisation and hate crimes.

Authorities in San Diego, California, are investigating a tragic shooting at the Islamic Center as a hate crime, which resulted in the deaths of three men, including a security guard. The incident involved two teenage shooters, aged 17 and 18, who subsequently took their own lives following the attack. Police Chief Scott Wahl commended the actions of the security guard, describing how he attempted to delay and distract the attackers, ultimately preventing further casualties.

Mark Remily, the lead agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in San Diego, reported that the shooters had met online and shared extremist views tied to white supremacy. In their writings, also obtained by The Associated Press, the suspects expressed hateful rhetoric aimed at various groups, including Jewish individuals, Muslims, the LGBTQ+ community, and others. Their manifestos reflect a belief in the elimination of white people and document personal grievances, including mental health struggles and social rejection.

In the aftermath of the incident, investigators discovered a cache of weapons, including at least 30 guns and a crossbow, at residences connected to the suspects. It remains unclear if they had broader plans beyond the immediate attack.

The victims included Amin Abdullah, a revered security guard, who engaged the adolescents in a confrontation and called for a lockdown at the mosque. Imam Taha Hassane described Abdullah as a hero for sacrificing his life in an attempt to save others, particularly the 140 schoolchildren located nearby. Abdullah had worked at the mosque for over ten years, fulfilling roles from security to caretaker. His actions likely averted further tragedy by delaying the shooters while also providing crucial time for a lockdown.

The assault at the Islamic Center is part of a disturbing trend of attacks targeting places of worship, coinciding with escalating hate crimes against Muslim and Jewish communities in the United States. Given the national context, authorities had increased security measures at the mosque, which houses a school and serves as the largest mosque in San Diego.

Witnesses to the vigil following the shooting recalled the lives lost and the community’s resilience. Imam Hassane emphasised the importance of unity among different faiths, stating that the community would celebrate its resilience in the wake of the tragedy. He urged attendees to honour the legacies of those who bravely stood against injustice.
