Norwegian Newspaper Criticised for Controversial Cartoon of PM Modi
Aftenposten faces backlash for a cartoon depicting PM Modi as a snake charmer, igniting discussions about colonial stereotypes and racism.

A Norwegian newspaper has come under fire after publishing a cartoon that portrayed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a snake charmer. This incident occurred during Modi's visit to Norway, and critics have accused the publication, Aftenposten, of reviving colonial-era stereotypes about India. The cartoon, which accompanied an opinion piece titled 'A clever and slightly annoying man,' featured Modi holding a fuel-pump hose depicted as a snake. Many online users expressed outrage, asserting that the illustration reinforced outdated Western perceptions of India as a land of snake charmers.

The controversy coincided with a press briefing involving a Norwegian journalist, Helle Lyng, who questioned why Modi did not take media questions during a joint appearance with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Although Modi did not respond to Lyng's inquiry, the exchange drew criticism from India's Ministry of External Affairs, represented by Secretary Sibi George, who defended India's democratic framework.

Critics described the cartoon as blatantly racist, with some users commenting on social media platforms that it demonstrated the ongoing existence of colonial mindsets within Western media. One commenter highlighted the irony, noting that Modi had previously addressed how India was stereotyped as a nation of snake charmers, contrasting this view with its current status as a technology-driven society.

This incident reflects a broader tension surrounding international perceptions of India. In the past, similar representations have drawn backlash, such as when a Spanish newspaper employed snake-charmer imagery regarding India’s economic progress. Modi himself has remarked on the outdated stereotypes during various international speeches, emphasising India's evolution from a portrayed land of snake charmers to a modern technology powerhouse.

The uproar over Aftenposten's cartoon is indicative of a larger cultural dialogue regarding how countries are represented in media and the implications of such portrayals. Many individuals and organisations argue that the use of such stereotypes perpetuates a colonial mentality that fails to acknowledge the complexities and advancements within India. The ongoing discourse highlights the need for more thoughtful and respectful representations in journalism, particularly when depicting countries with vast cultural narratives and histories.

In response to the criticism, journalist Helle Lyng defended her questioning style, stating that journalism can sometimes adopt a confrontational approach to address pressing issues surrounding human rights and press freedom. After the controversy, she also revealed that her social media accounts had been suspended, which she claimed was a small price to pay for upholding press freedom amidst challenges.
