Abhishek Banerjee Faces Scrutiny Over Properties in Kolkata
Kolkata Municipal Corporation has issued notices to Abhishek Banerjee, general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, concerning several properties associated with him. The notices are issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, requesting documentation related to building plan approvals and confirmation of permissions for extra constructions.
The Trinamool Congress governs the municipal body, yet notices have been sent to Banerjee, highlighting a complicated political scenario. Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has recently drawn attention to the properties owned by Banerjee and other party leaders, specifically referencing the holdings of various officials. On May 18, 2026, he noted differences in property ownership among several Trinamool leaders, including 18 properties owned by Raju Naskar and 24 by another party member named Sona Pappu. Abhishek Banerjee himself is reported to have 14 properties under the name of Leaps and Bounds, four in his own name, and six registered to his father.
This scrutiny follows a separate issue regarding an FIR lodged against Banerjee at Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station. The complaint, filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar, accuses him of making inflammatory remarks and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah within a specified timeframe. Banerjee has responded by filing a petition with the Calcutta High Court, seeking to annul the FIR.
Senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, who represents him, mentioned the matter is set to be heard later this week before a bench led by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya. Following a less than favourable result in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, Banerjee faces criticism from various BJP leaders, with state president Samik Bhattacharya questioning his campaigning efforts in the Falta Assembly constituency, where voting is scheduled for May 21, 2026.
This series of events highlights the ongoing tensions and allegations between factions of West Bengal's political landscape, as investigations into property ownership and conduct continue to unfold.
