Renault Relaunches Duster in India, Focuses on Hybrid Technology
On March 17, 2026, Renault officially unveiled the third-generation Duster in India, reviving a popular compact SUV that had previously exited the market. The launch signals a significant shift in the company's strategy, now centring around hybrid technology and a diverse range of powertrains.
The new Duster is priced from approximately ā¹10.3 lakh (ex-showroom) and enters a market where it will compete with established rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Unlike its competitors, Renault is taking a unique approach focused on electrification through hybrid systems rather than a full transition to electric vehicles.
Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Renault India, highlighted the company's ambitions for the hybrid segment, stating, "It is still a small market because there is no offer. But we are coming strong and the results are very encouraging." This statement underscores Renault's optimism about the potential for hybrid vehicles in India, despite currently low market presence.
The Duster will be available with various powertrains: traditional turbo-petrol engines as well as a strong hybrid option expected to launch later in the year. According to Mr Hidalgo, the hybrid variant will serve as the technological flagship for the brand and is particularly suitable for urban driving due to its efficiency.
He elaborated on Renault's plans, noting, "Our experience in many parts of the world shows that the perfect replacement for diesel is hybrid. Hybrid will be super efficient on city driving." With India's electric vehicle market still in its infancyāaccounting for only about 4% of total vehicle salesāRenault is adopting a cautious approach. The company will consider introducing fully electric vehicles only when a more substantial demand develops.
Currently, Renault holds under 1% of the Indian automotive market and aims to increase its stake to 4-5% by 2030. This ambitious goal represents a strategic effort to recapture market share amid increasing competition.
The Duster itself is set to offer substantial features catering to consumer preferences, including a ten-inch infotainment touchscreen with Google operating system, wireless compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, climate control, and advanced safety features including multiple airbags and a 360-degree camera.
The announcement of the Duster's relaunch is expected to resonate with consumers in India, marking Renault's commitment to providing a versatile and attractive option in the crowded SUV market. As the automotive landscape in India continues to evolve, Renault's hybrid focus may very well pave the way for future success in the region.
