EAM Jaishankar Discusses Economic Cooperation with EU Leaders
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently completed a significant visit to Brussels, where he engaged with European Union (EU) leadership to discuss the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The discussions focused on strategic collaboration in various sectors including technology, supply chain resilience, security partnerships, and initiatives aimed at improving connectivity. During his visit, Mr. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the newly signed FTA, identifying it as a crucial step in enhancing bilateral ties.
He underscored that the finalisation of this agreement would not only unlock vast economic opportunities but also reinforce the strategic nature of the relationship between India and the EU. Mr. Jaishankar announced the outcomes of his meetings on social media platform X, stating he had productive discussions with members of the EU Foreign Affairs Council as well as prominent leaders such as Antonio Costa, Ursula von der Leyen, and Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
He noted, 'The finalisation of the Free Trade Agreement represents a turning point in India-EU ties. It will not only unlock its enormous economic potential but also express the strategic nature of our engagement.' Emphasising cooperation, he encouraged both parties to actively promote trade and investment. He mentioned upgrading the Trade and Technology Council to facilitate collaboration in essential and advanced technologies.
In addition, establishing resilience in supply chains was identified as a mutual priority, with the FTA expected to foster closer business connections between the regions. Mr. Jaishankar also discussed the significance of talent mobility, advocating for streamlined processes related to skills and talent flows. He pointed out the establishment of the Legal Gateway Office in India as a positive development.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening security collaboration through advancing the Security and Defence Partnership. Efforts to conclude the Security of Information Agreement promptly were also addressed. Connectivity was described as a key agenda item, with existing initiatives such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (IMEC) being highlighted for further development.
As global multilateralism faces challenges, Mr. Jaishankar expressed the aim to fortify institutional ties between India and the EU. He concluded by stating, 'In a multipolar and uncertain world, the India-EU partnership will act as a factor of stability and resilience.' This visit is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the strategic partnership between India and the European Union, signalling a commitment to collaborative futures across various sectors.
