Protests Erupt in Falta Over Alleged TMC Threats During Elections
Hundreds protest in Falta, West Bengal, claiming threats from TMC workers on election day, raising tensions ahead of vote counting.

On Saturday, villagers in Falta, located in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, staged a protest amid allegations of intimidation by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The gathering coincided with the re-polling day for the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026.

Protesters, predominantly women and supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), gathered in Hasimnagar village to voice their concerns. They reportedly blocked a roadway in response to threats they claimed to have received from local TMC workers. Specifically, they accused Israfil, a local panchayat pradhan and close ally of TMC candidate Jehangir Khan, of issuing threats of violence following the announcement of poll results.

The situation escalated in the region as hundreds voiced demands for safety and order amid fears that retaliation might occur after the counting of votes. The presence of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel was noted in the area, aimed at maintaining peace during the electoral process.

As the tensions unfolded, many villagers expressed dissatisfaction with the political atmosphere in Falta, alleging that such intimidation tactics undermine the integrity of the electoral process. An attendee of the protest referenced the fear gripping the community, saying that many residents feel unsafe in expressing their political preferences due to supposed repercussions.

Authorities have acknowledged the unrest and have deployed security forces to ensure that order is upheld as the elections progress. This incident reflects broader tensions in West Bengal’s political landscape, where allegations of misconduct during electoral events have been a point of contention.

The West Bengal Assembly elections have been closely watched, with various parties vying for influence in the region. As results near, the situation in Falta serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges faced in maintaining a peaceful electoral environment in politically charged territories.
