China Asks US to Address Taiwan Concerns Ahead of Trump's Visit
China's foreign minister urges the US to ensure stability regarding Taiwan as President Trump prepares for his upcoming visit to Beijing.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on the United States to make prudent choices regarding Taiwan during a discussion with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This warning comes as President Donald Trump is set to visit Beijing on 14-15 May, marking his first trip to China since resuming office in January 2025.

In a statement released by China’s foreign ministry, Mr Wang stressed the importance of maintaining stability between the two nations, indicating that the Taiwan issue remains a significant risk factor in China-US relations. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan operates as a self-governing democracy. Beijing has expressed strong discontent over US military support for Taiwan and its backing of Taiwan on the global stage.

During the call, Wang urged both nations to “safeguard the hard-won stability” in their relationship. He remarked that it is imperative for both sides to prepare effectively for upcoming high-level interactions and to expand areas of cooperation.

“The United States must honour its commitments and make the right choices, opening new perspectives for bilateral cooperation and do its part to promote world peace,” Wang stated.

The conversation also touched on the situation in the Middle East, where China has established itself as a significant ally of Tehran. However, the country has distanced itself from the ongoing tensions involving Israel and Iran, particularly after Trump's administration adopted an aggressive stance against Iran, contributing to fluctuations in global oil prices.

A spokesperson for the US State Department confirmed the conversation but refrained from providing detailed insights regarding the planning of Trump's upcoming trip. Both nations have experienced a turbulent relationship over trade issues, although a truce was reached last October during a meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping in South Korea. Since then, while relations have remained largely stable, the ongoing Taiwan issue continues to provoke concern from Beijing about US involvement in the region.
