Prime Minister Modi Concludes Five-Nation Tour and Returns Home
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from a five-country tour, enhancing bilateral ties and signing key agreements on defence and energy.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived back in the national capital, New Delhi, after completing a five-nation tour. The visit, which lasted from May 15 to May 20, 2026, took him through the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. During this diplomatic mission, he signed multiple agreements focusing on energy, defence, and critical minerals.

The Prime Minister left Italy, the final stop of his journey, on May 20. He shared highlights of his visit via social media platform X, stating, "Concluding a very productive visit to Italy. My discussions with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni covered a wide range of sectors." He emphasised the decision to elevate India-Italy relations to a Special Strategic Partnership, aiming to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

In another post, he expressed gratitude, saying, "I thank Prime Minister Meloni, the Government of Italy and the wonderful people of Italy for their friendship."

External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal echoed Modi's sentiments, stating, "India-Italy ties going from strength to strength! The final leg of the PM's five-country tour concludes. PM has departed for India after a successful visit to Italy marked by significant outcomes and fresh momentum in deepening the Special Strategic Partnership with Italy."

In addition to discussions with Prime Minister Meloni, Modi met Italian President Sergio Mattarella. Their conversations included various aspects of India-Italy relations, covering trade, investment, cultural ties, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, space, and nuclear energy. Furthermore, Modi was awarded the prestigious FAO Agricola Medal during this visit. As part of a symbolic gesture, he and Meloni planted a mulberry tree, reinforcing the spirit of collaboration under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative.

Prior to Italy, Modi had engaged in significant discussions in Norway, where he participated in the third India-Nordic summit. In Norway, the Prime Minister was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, the country's highest civilian honour. This visit marked the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years.

Modi's journey began in the United Arab Emirates, where he established pivotal agreements including those relating to strategic petroleum reserves and long-term liquefied petroleum gas supplies. The UAE also announced investments amounting to $5 billion in India, amid growing tensions in West Asia.

His itinerary included the Netherlands, where Modi and his counterpart, Rob Jetten, agreed to elevate their nations’ ties to a strategic partnership and signed 17 agreements covering defence and critical minerals, among other sectors. The two leaders unveiled a strategic partnership roadmap designed to develop trade and investment opportunities, particularly in emerging technologies.

In Sweden, Modi was bestowed with the 'Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross' to honour his contributions to enhancing India-Sweden relations. The two countries decided to augment their partnership to a strategic level during his visit.

As Prime Minister Modi returns to India, the outcomes of this tour are expected to catalyse deeper international collaborations and investment opportunities across several vital sectors.
