Pakistan Cricket Board Awaits Decision on India T20 Match
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has announced that a decision regarding the scheduled T20 World Cup match against India, set for February 15, is expected within the next 48 hours. Naqvi stated, 'We have had discussions with them (the ICC). It would not be right for me to make any comments right now. Once we get their (the ICC's) response, we will decide.' Following the ICC's feedback, the PCB plans to consult with Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, before making any final announcements.
This development comes after a lengthy meeting held in Lahore, where Mohsin Naqvi engaged with the ICC deputy chair, Imran Khwaja, regarding Pakistan's recent position on boycotting the forthcoming match. During discussions, the Bangladeshi Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam also made a formal request for Pakistan to participate in the match, emphasising the importance of unity within the cricketing community. 'We are deeply moved by Pakistan's efforts to go above and beyond in supporting Bangladesh during this period. Long may our brotherhood flourish,' Islam expressed.
The PCBâs proposed boycott of the match was largely influenced by concerns regarding the treatment of Bangladesh by the ICC, which Pakistan believes was handled unfairly. The ICC has rejected multiple demands from Pakistan, including calls for the resumption of bilateral matches between India and Pakistan, and for a tri-series involving the three nations.
As per reports, the ICC is likely to make an official announcement regarding the future of the India-Pakistan match either late Monday or early Tuesday. The PCB had previously communicated with the ICC to clarify its position after the Pakistan government restricted the national team's participation in the World Cup matches against India.
Pakistanâs decision to reconsider its boycott came after discussions at the highest levels. However, should Pakistan opt to withdraw from the match, it might face significant financial repercussions. The iconic rivalry between India and Pakistan is known to generate considerable revenue, and a no-show could result in considerable losses for the ICC and associated broadcasters.
Given the financial stakes involved, both teams are closely monitoring the situation as they prepare for their respective plans related to the T20 World Cup. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is awaiting formal communications from the ICC regarding the developments, while Indian players are proceeding as scheduled with their training and preparations in Sri Lanka for the upcoming fixtures.
