New Zealand Edges Towards Series Victory Against England in Test Match
On the fourth day of the Test match, New Zealand gains an upper hand against England as Ben Stokes faces his emotional farewell.

In a gripping encounter at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, New Zealand positioned itself for a potential series victory against England in the third Test. After day four, hosts England were left with 103 runs for the loss of four wickets, still requiring 270 runs to claim a win as New Zealand declared their second innings at 288 for 9. This match marks the final international appearance for England's captain Ben Stokes, who is aiming for a victorious send-off.

In an exhilarating evening session, led by Stokes, England pursued their target vigorously. However, the loss of four wickets has put New Zealand in a commanding position heading into the final day. "We’re slightly disappointed we find ourselves four down but we managed to make a big dent in it with the new ball and make it easier for ourselves tomorrow," stated Joe Root, who remains unbeaten on nine runs.

Stokes had earlier announced his retirement during a lengthy bowling spell, promoting himself to open the batting in an ambitious quest for victory. He made an immediate impact, hitting a six off Zak Foulkes, becoming the earliest player to achieve such a feat for England in Test cricket, having done so on just the 11th delivery of the innings. His innings included 30 runs from 20 balls before departing to a standing ovation from the crowd.

Spectators saw another quick dismissal shortly thereafter when Jacob Bethell was out for a duck. Harry Brook, expected to succeed Stokes as captain, made 21 runs quickly before also falling victim to Foulkes, leaving England at 103 for 4 after merely 15 overs.

In New Zealand's second innings, Daryl Mitchell was a standout performer, scoring an impressive 100 not out from 241 balls, overcoming multiple head injuries during his innings. Mitchell shared a vital fourth-wicket partnership of 129 runs with Rachin Ravindra, who contributed 94 runs.

Mitchell expressed confidence in their position, saying, "We knew we had to tick it over and absorb the pressure, and the fruits would come and Daryl, especially, showed that in the end." Daryl Mitchell's century is his sixth in Test cricket, marking a significant personal achievement in a match that is also critical for his team. New Zealand's bowlers, particularly Foulkes, have played a crucial role in undermining England's batting strength. With one day to go, the series remains finely poised, but New Zealand holds the edge as it aims to secure a 2-1 series win.
