Venezuela Earthquake Response: Camps for Displaced Amid Rescue Efforts
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announces temporary camps for displaced Venezuelans as rescue efforts continue following recent earthquakes.

Following devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, authorities have announced plans to house displaced individuals in temporary camps. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez made the announcement during a state television broadcast, stating that a presidential commission will assess the safety of damaged housing and infrastructure. This comes in the wake of twin earthquakes, with estimates indicating that at least 1,450 individuals have lost their lives, and that figure is likely to increase.

Rescue operations are ongoing, as volunteers and emergency teams dig through rubble in search of survivors. A recent rescue saw a 21-year-old man pulled from the debris after spending 106 hours trapped. The urgency of these operations has been highlighted by on-the-ground accounts, including one from a resident in Caracas who expressed frustration over delayed rescue efforts, remarking, “My son would be alive if the rescuers had arrived on time.”

International aid has also begun to flow into the country amidst rising concerns over the building's structural integrity. Rodríguez noted that her commission would classify the safety of homes using a traffic light system to determine when families could return. While temporary shelters are being set up, she mentioned that planning for the construction of new homes would commence soon.

In addition to local rescue efforts, foreign assistance has been crucial; countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, and various Latin American nations are sending specialised teams and equipment. The United States has pledged over $300 million to provide emergency support, including medical care, food, water, and shelter, which is being managed through partner organisations like the World Food Programme and the Red Cross.

As hopes for additional rescues remain, the delicate situation continues with the looming threat of aftershocks, including a 4.6-magnitude tremor felt recently near La Guaira. Rescue operations are progressing under challenging conditions, with approximately 30,000 Venezuelan workers and 2,700 international experts engaged in the search for survivors.

Despite the critical 72-hour window for rescues after a natural disaster having passed, there are still signs of life beneath the rubble, offering glimmers of hope to rescue teams. The involvement of specialised rescue dogs has proven vital, as these animals can detect signs of life, allowing for quicker identification of trapped individuals.

As the situation develops, the world watches Venezuela navigate this humanitarian crisis, amidst political and economic challenges. Delcy Rodríguez has stated that every effort will be made to locate any remaining survivors and provide necessary support to those affected.
