Kim Jong Un Advocates for Expansion of North Korea's Nuclear Arsenal
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced a call for the substantial expansion of the country’s nuclear arsenal. This statement emerged during the second plenary meeting of the Ninth Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, which took place from Saturday to Monday.
Kim expressed concerns regarding what he termed a resurgence of modern ultra-nationalism globally, specifically highlighting ideologies such as the 'America First' doctrine, Zionism, and others. He accused powerful nations of exacerbating international tensions through what he described as 'gangster-like' behaviour and an abuse of power driven by geopolitical greed.
In his speech, Kim remarked, 'The world is witnessing rampant ultra-nationalism... reminiscent of the disastrous scenes a century ago,' referencing past global conflicts. He specifically targeted Japan, suggesting that it is seizing the current geopolitical instability to advance its military ambitions.
Furthermore, Kim reaffirmed his intention to enhance North Korea's military capabilities. He attributed the growing military alliance between the United States and South Korea as a primary factor increasing the threat level on the Korean Peninsula. The North Korean leader indicated that effective self-defence necessitates an increase in national defence initiatives and a robust deterrent strategy.
His remarks also reflected unease over South Korea's advancements in its military capabilities, particularly with its pursuit of a new nuclear-powered submarine project. The establishment of the US-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group, aimed at coordinating nuclear strategies, was also condemned by Kim, underscoring North Korea's steadfast position as a nuclear weapons state.
In a related matter, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spoke out against Japan's military enhancement, claiming it is taking steps toward remilitarisation. The spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, accused Tokyo of loosening restrictions on its defence practices, indicating a broader scope for its Self-Defense Forces and a shift from its traditionally defensive stance.
Kim Jong Un's call for a nuclear arsenal expansion highlights ongoing tensions in East Asia, as nations grapple with a rapidly changing security landscape.
