India Launches First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vessel in Varanasi
Varanasi, India - The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated the commercial operation of India's inaugural fully indigenous hydrogen fuel cell vessel on Thursday at Namo Ghat. This launch signifies a significant advancement in India’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable inland water transport.
The vessel, a hydrogen-powered catamaran, measures 24 metres in length and features an air-conditioned cabin designed to accommodate up to 50 passengers. It has been developed under the central government's Harit Nauka initiative, which aims to foster the use of clean propulsion technologies in the maritime industry. The construction of the vessel was undertaken by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), marking it as a pilot project for the demonstration of innovative transport solutions.
The ceremony for the vessel's launch commenced at 10.30 am, with Minister Sonowal performing the flag-off at Namo Ghat. This vessel operates using a hydrogen fuel cell system that generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction. This process produces only pure water and heat as byproducts, leading to zero emissions, minimal noise pollution, and enhanced energy efficiency. Specifically, it employs Low-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (LT-PEM) fuel cells in conjunction with Lithium-Ion Phosphate batteries for auxiliary power needs.
The introduction of this hydrogen vessel represents a pivotal move towards India's commitment to clean energy solutions within the maritime sector. It aligns with the country's broader net-zero emission targets, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions while modernising the extensive inland water transport (IWT) network.
Sarbananda Sonowal remarked, "The launch of this vessel is a testament to our commitment to sustainable development and innovation in the transport sector." The initiative underscores the government's focus on harnessing renewable energy resources, which is vital to combat climate change and promote ecological balance.
As India continues to explore and implement alternative energy solutions, the successful operation of this hydrogen fuel cell vessel could pave the way for further advancements in green transportation, offering a model for future projects across the nation.
This vessel's launch is expected to enhance the tourism sector in Varanasi while contributing positively to the environment and setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in maritime transport in India.
