India Enhances Surveillance Amid No Reported Ebola Cases
The Indian government increases health surveillance following a WHO alert, although no Ebola cases have been reported in the country.

The Indian government has amplified its health surveillance measures in response to a World Health Organization (WHO) alert regarding the Ebola virus. As of now, there have been no reported cases of Ebola within India. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued an advisory for passengers arriving from nations identified as high-risk for Ebola transmission, specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Travelers from these countries are urged to report any symptoms or exposure history to health authorities at airports before they pass through immigration. Symptoms related to Ebola include fever, weakness, and unexplained bleeding, among others. The advisory emphasizes that individuals who have had direct contact with the bodily fluids of suspected or confirmed Ebola patients must inform airport health officers immediately.

The Airport Health Organisation (APHO) has been proactive, displaying this advisory prominently at airport terminals. Authorities stress the importance of vigilance among incoming travelers, especially those showing symptoms within 21 days of their arrival.

On May 20, 2026, India's Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava chaired a high-level review meeting with health secretaries from all states and union territories to assess the nation’s readiness and response to potential Ebola threats. Union Health Ministry officials confirmed that no cases have been detected in India to date. However, following the WHO's classification of Ebola as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the government has taken substantial precautions by enhancing surveillance and preparedness nationwide.

The meeting underscored the necessity for state and union territory administrations to ensure that comprehensive readiness plans are in place. Detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding both pre-arrival and post-arrival screening, quarantine protocols, case management, and laboratory testing have been disseminated to all relevant states and territories. Furthermore, all pertinent ministries and departments have been notified to implement preventive measures and maintain a high level of vigilance in collaboration with the Health Ministry.

Health officials encourage public awareness on the symptoms of Ebola and the importance of reporting any potential exposure promptly to mitigate any risk of transmission effectively.
