India Continues Purchases of Russian Oil Despite US Sanctions
India confirms ongoing Russian oil purchases amid the expiration of US sanctions waivers, maintaining a strong demand for crude imports.

The Indian government has announced that it will persist in purchasing oil from Russia, irrespective of sanctions imposed by the United States. During a press conference on Monday, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated, "Regarding the American waiver on Russia, I would like to emphasise that we have been purchasing from Russia earlier...I mean before waiver also, during waiver also, and now also."

Sujata Sharma further highlighted that economic factors dictate their decision to procure crude oil, noting, "It is basically the commercial sense which should be there for us to purchase. There is no shortage of crude. Enough crude has been tied up repeatedly...and this, whatever waiver or no waiver, it will not affect."

The comments come shortly after the US allowed a sanctions waiver that previously enabled countries, including India, to continue buying Russian oil. This waiver had been extended for a month to help ease supply shortages and manage heightened prices that arose from Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz. India has emerged as the largest consumer of Russian seaborne crude, with purchase levels reaching near record highs in the months of April and May, following earlier waivers of sanctions.

This situation underscores the ongoing complexities surrounding global oil markets and geopolitical relations as various countries navigate their economic interests against international regulations.

Given the fluctuating oil prices and the international landscape, India’s strategy to continue engaging with Russian oil sources reflects its prioritisation of energy security and economic stability amidst external pressures.

The Indian government has consistently maintained that its crude oil imports are driven by commercial rationality, reinforcing its position in an increasingly competitive global market.

Sujata Sharma's remarks indicate that India's commitment to its energy strategy remains resolute, despite external criticisms and changing political dynamics on the global stage.
