Assassination of Hamas Commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad Affects Gaza Conflict
The killing of Hamas commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad raises questions about Gaza operations and the future of the ceasefire.

The recent assassination of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, head of the Qassam Brigades, Hamas's military division, has cast a shadow over the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. Analysts suggest that while his death is a significant blow to the group, the repercussions on its operational capacity remain uncertain.

Izz al-Din al-Haddad was killed during a coordinated attack on his residence in the Remal neighbourhood of Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of seven other Palestinians, including women and children, and left over 50 injured. The Israeli government contends that this act will severely disrupt Hamas’s military capabilities. However, experts assert that the group's decentralised structure allows it to withstand such losses.

Saeed Ziad, a Palestinian political analyst, noted that the Qassam Brigades operate independently, with each unit equipped to continue its mission autonomously. "Over the past two decades, Hamas has transformed into a guerrilla force, which lessens the impact of losing a commander," Ziad stated. He elaborated that restructuring the central command will likely take only days.

Under al-Haddad's leadership, the group had developed its military capabilities after the ceasefire with Israel, reinforcing its infrastructure. His efforts included rebuilding tunnels and enhancing weaponry, positioning Hamas for continued resistance.

Despite Israeli claims of having nearly dismantled Hamas’s leadership, analysts highlight the remaining strength within its ranks. The military wing previously numbered around 50,000 fighters, who are organised with clear protocols for leadership succession, ensuring swift responses to commanders' deaths.

Following al-Haddad’s assassination, Hamas officials affirmed his significance to the group and promised that its resistance would persist. He has been credited with pivotal roles in planning assaults against Israeli forces and was instrumental in the planning of the October 7, 2023 attacks.

The circumstances leading to his death suggest lapses in his own operational security. Reports indicate that he made several missteps that allowed Israeli intelligence to track him, particularly his decision to emerge from his concealed locations into highly exposed areas.

Israeli leadership has publicly embraced the killing as a demonstration of military success, framing it as a move to further their objectives against Hamas. Observers note that ongoing civilian deaths since the announcement of a ceasefire highlight the tense situation in Gaza, raising concerns about the viability of the current peace efforts.

The assassination has ignited questions about how Hamas will adjust in light of its leadership's losses. historical patterns indicate that the elimination of key figures within the group does not often translate into lasting reductions in its operational capabilities. Instead, such incidents may galvanise support for Hamas, as seen in past conflicts.

With ongoing military actions, the future of peace in Gaza hangs in the balance, compounded by the continuous loss of civilian life and pressure on Hamas to retaliate. As the situation remains fluid, the international community is left to speculate on the long-term ramifications of this high-profile assassination.
