Ukrainian Drone Strike in Russia Results in Multiple Casualties
An Indian national has been confirmed dead and three others injured following a significant drone strike launched by Ukraine in the Moscow region on Sunday. The Embassy of India in Russia has provided updates stating that its representatives have visited the site of the incident and met with the injured workers at a local hospital.
In an official statement issued on X, the embassy expressed condolences for the loss of life and highlighted its commitment to assisting the victims in collaboration with the company involved and local authorities. The identities of the individuals affected have not yet been disclosed.
Ukrainian forces executed one of their largest drone attacks on Moscow in recent months, resulting in air raid alerts, multiple explosions, and falling debris across various parts of the capital and its surroundings. Russia's defence ministry reported that it intercepted over 1,000 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour period.
Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed that air defence systems successfully shot down at least 81 drones that were headed towards the city overnight. The strikes inflicted damage on residential buildings and local infrastructure, contributing to a rising death toll in the area. It was reported that at least four individuals lost their lives during the attack, which included three fatalities from the Moscow region and another death in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.
Authorities have indicated that the tragic death of a woman occurred in Khimki, a town north of Moscow, when debris struck her home. Additionally, two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki within the Mytishchi district. Several other casualties have been documented, with some injuries occurring near an operational oil refinery in Moscow, though officials insisted that the facility itself did not sustain major damage.
The drone assault unfolded shortly after Russia carried out one of its most intensive aerial bombardments on Kyiv since the onset of the conflict more than four years ago. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously vowed to retaliate against Russian attacks. In a shared video on X, he provided footage displaying smoke arising from hit locations, accompanied by emergency crews tackling flames.
Zelenskyy asserted that the strikes represented justified responses to ongoing Russian assaults on Ukrainian urban areas and civilians. He also claimed that Ukraine was capable of reaching targets located more than 500 kilometres within Russian territory, despite the extensive air defence systems Moscow has in place.
In reaction, Moscow condemned the drone attacks, accusing Ukraine of targeting civilians. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, characterised the drone strikes as a 'mass terrorist attack', according to reports from Russian state news agency TASS. Throughout the conflict, both Russia and Ukraine have consistently denied the deliberate targeting of civilians, although there have been numerous incidents affecting residential areas and civilian infrastructure on both sides.
