India's BSE IT Index Faces Significant Challenges in 2026
The BSE Information Technology index has declined sharply, prompting questions about its future performance and potential recovery.

The BSE Information Technology (IT) index in India has experienced a considerable decline this year, falling approximately 25 per cent year-to-date. This makes it the poorest-performing sector thus far in 2026. Last year, the index also faced difficulties, declining by 15 per cent, which was the second-worst performance among sectors. The index reached a peak of 45,792 points in December 2024 but has since plummeted by nearly 40 per cent.

Earlier this year, in a report titled “Sectors to play in 2026,” the prediction was made for a potential rally of the BSE IT index from 36,795 to 49,500 by the year’s end. However, that forecast has not materialised, as the index fell below the stop-loss level of 30,600 to a low of 27,428 last month. Its current position is at 27,648.74.

Investors may be left wondering whether the IT index can fall further and, if so, how far it can drop. A technical analysis suggests there are no definitive signs of a significant downturn or a reversal in trend at this moment. Nevertheless, some strong support levels are emerging for the index. The first significant support is at 26,930, which corresponds to the 100-Month Moving Average (MMA) and is critical to monitor. During the Covid-19 market crash, the IT index found a bottom just above this MMA.

Another crucial support level is seen in the range of 24,700 to 24,250, coinciding with a trendline and the 61.8 per cent Fibonacci retracement support. Resistance levels have been identified at 36,000, followed by the 39,500 to 40,000 range.

Two potential scenarios are being monitored. The first is whether the index can sustain above the 26,930 level (100-MMA) and subsequently exceed 36,000. If it does, this may indicate an early sign of relief and potential trend reversal. Conversely, if the index breaks below the 100-MMA support, it may see an extended decline towards 24,700 or 24,250, though projections do not anticipate a drop past 24,250.

Chances are seen for the BSE IT index to find stability within the 24,700 to 24,250 range, equating to a further 12 per cent decline from current levels. A significant bounce from this support zone, followed by a rise above 30,000, would provide a much-needed breather. Success in surpassing 36,000 could suggest a formation of a new upward trend.

The long-term outlook appears uncertain, but the BSE IT index currently hovers near robust long-term support. The insight provided by a log chart—a tool used in technical analysis—highlights how percentage changes rather than absolute values offer crucial insights into long-term trends.

The log chart has shown a long-term trendline support at 27,400, and an additional support level at 26,650. Since 2008, price movements suggest a bullish channel, with the index positioned at the lower end. However, the present environment does not favour a rapid ascent, especially due to fundamental shifts instigated by technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence.

Given the prevailing negative sentiment, it is possible that the BSE IT index may experience a sideways trading range between 26,500 and 40,000 until there are improvements in the fundamental environment for the sector. The immediate future of the BSE IT index thus relies heavily on key support levels and the ability to breach necessary resistance points as the market evolves amid ongoing technological disruptions.
