Raghav Chadha's Shift to BJP Sparks Tensions in AAP Punjab
Raghav Chadha's departure from AAP to BJP ignites criticism and calls for disqualification from his former party members in Punjab.

Raghav Chadha's recent departure from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alongside six fellow Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament (MPs), has led to heightened tensions within the AAP, particularly in Punjab. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed the press in Chandigarh, indirectly targeting Chadha by referring to 'Kothi Number 50', a bungalow where Chadha previously wielded considerable influence.

Located near Mann's official residence, Kothi Number 50 served as a hub for political activity in the early years of AAP's governance in Punjab following their 2022 electoral victory. During this time, it became known as a 'parallel centre of power', as various stakeholders including civil officers, business leaders, and politicians frequently visited to meet Chadha.

Chadha's diminishing relationship with the AAP leadership had been apparent for some time, particularly over the last year, marking a shift in his standing within the party. During his announcement to join the BJP, Chadha had been previously accused by opposition figures of being excessively influential over state governance, and now, former party associates are reflecting on this power dynamic.

Malvinder Singh Kang, an AAP Lok Sabha MP, expressed regret about the power granted to Chadha, stating, 'We should have kept a check on Raghav Chadha.' He acknowledged that the party had placed too much trust in him. Subsequent commentary from Balbir Singh Seechewal, AAP's last Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, suggested that Chadha had been regarded as the 'supremo of Punjab' during his tenure.

In the wake of these events, the AAP's leadership is taking steps to contest the defections legally. Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh announced the submission of a petition to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, C. P. Radhakrishnan, seeking the disqualification of the defecting MPs under anti-defection laws. Singh condemned their actions, highlighting the betrayal of voters who elected them under AAP's banner.

Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has publicly welcomed the defectors, framing their departure as an escape from a 'sinking ship'. He claimed that Chadha had previously acted as a 'super Chief Minister' and questioned his sudden shift in allegiance. This reflects a broader narrative attempting to interrogate AAP's internal stability ahead of upcoming elections.

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, a former Congress member who switched to the BJP, commented that Chadha’s insider knowledge might prove valuable as AAP navigates its forthcoming electoral challenges. He suggested that Chadha's erstwhile status as a key player could lead to significant revelations regarding AAP's internal operations.

As political manoeuvring continues, the fallout from Chadha's transition is expected to impact party dynamics, public perception, and the competition in Punjab politics moving towards future elections.
