Leadership Speculation in Karnataka as D.K. Shivakumar Awaits Decision
D.K. Shivakumar expresses trust in Congress leadership over Karnataka's CM position amid calls for his appointment.

In Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has reaffirmed his commitment to following the decisions of the Congress high command regarding the state's leadership. After returning from New Delhi, he spoke to reporters about his faith in the party's leadership, emphasising that both he and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are prepared to abide by any forthcoming instructions from the central party leadership. "Both the Chief Minister and I have said that we will follow the high command’s instructions and act accordingly," Shivakumar stated.

The comments come in the backdrop of increased speculation over a potential leadership change or cabinet reshuffle following the results of assembly elections in several states, scheduled to be announced on May 4. Shivakumar's statements suggest a passive stance from the current leadership, as pressures mount from within the party and from external sources advocating for a change.

Pranavananda Swamiji, the president of a prominent forum representing most backward communities in Karnataka, has voiced strong support for Shivakumar. He urged the Congress leadership to promptly appoint Shivakumar as Chief Minister, warning of serious repercussions if the demand is not met. Noting that Shivakumar has made significant contributions to the party, especially during his tenure as president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Swamiji remarked on the importance of recognising his efforts in the context of the upcoming political developments.

Amid these dynamics, Swamiji expressed disappointment, highlighting that although Siddaramaiah is a respected leader among backward communities, a leadership change is overdue to adequately address the interests of these groups. "Shivakumar's contribution to most backward communities is immense. He has been an MLA multiple times and a minister several times. Why is he not being given the CM post?" he said.

The backdrop of this leadership tussle is rooted in a perceived understanding between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah regarding power-sharing when the Congress government was formed in 2023. The party's internal dynamics may be reaching a critical juncture as it approaches the halfway mark of its five-year term, which falls on November 20, 2025. Observers suggest that if the Congress does not address these speculative leadership issues, it may face electoral repercussions in the future.
