Heavy Rainfall in Dubai Prompts Safety Warnings for Residents
Dubai is currently experiencing significant rainfall, prompting local authorities to advise residents to remain indoors. The recent downpours come in the wake of last year's record rainfall that caused extensive flooding across the city.
In an alert issued by the Dubai police, residents were cautioned to exercise caution due to unstable weather conditions expected to persist. The police message, which was sent to mobile phones, advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outings until midday on Friday. According to the National Centre of Meteorology in the United Arab Emirates, a warning for heavy rain has been issued for both Thursday and Friday, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi being the most affected regions.
The severe weather has also prompted alerts in neighbouring Gulf countries, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, where heavy rain has been reported. As detailed in a report by Khaleej Times, the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence has urged residents to stay vigilant and take precautions against the potential for flash floods.
Videos circulating on the social media platform X show the iconic Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, obscured by thick cloud cover as the storm intensifies. The extreme weather has raised concerns reminiscent of the previous year's unprecedented rainfall, which severely disrupted daily life in Dubai and other cities.
In 2024, the UAE experienced record levels of rainfall, resulting in significant flooding that affected transportation and infrastructure. The heavy storms turned streets into rivers and caused disruptions at Dubai International Airport, which is recognised as the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic.
In response to the recent weather conditions, the UAE government is promoting remote work arrangements for employees in the private sector. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has encouraged employers in the hardest-hit areas to allow staff to work from home where feasible. This guidance reflects the growing emphasis on employee safety amid severe weather conditions.
As heavy rainfall continues across various emirates, the MoHRE reminded organisations to adhere to occupational health and safety protocols, ensuring that employees are protected from potential environmental hazards. The National Centre of Meteorology has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain, lightning, and possible hail, reinforcing the need for residents to follow safety instructions.
The severe weather has already led to localised flooding, fallen trees, and damage to property in multiple emirates. Many workers have either been instructed to work remotely or were released early from offices as conditions deteriorated. Public parks, beaches, and outdoor venues have also been temporarily closed to mitigate safety risks.
The recent severe weather highlights the importance of remote work policies that many companies adopted following the flooding events of 2024, recognising the need for flexibility to protect employees during hazardous conditions.
