US President Donald Trump confirms May meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping after postponing the visit due to the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

United States President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China on 14-15 May. This visit comes after a delay due to the ongoing conflict between the US and Israel against Iran. The meeting marks the first time in nearly a decade that a sitting US president will travel to China.

Trump, who also plans to host Xi in Washington D.C. later this year, shared these details via Truth Social on Wednesday. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meeting dates, stating that President Xi had accepted the request to delay the trip. "President Xi understood that it's very important for the president to be here throughout these combat operations right now," Leavitt remarked during a press briefing.

The Chinese government has yet to officially confirm the proposed dates. Typically, Beijing does not disclose President Xi's schedule well in advance. However, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian mentioned that both nations are in ongoing communication about the anticipated visit. He stressed the importance of leader-level diplomacy in guiding bilateral ties.

The visit was initially scheduled for 31 March but was postponed after extensive military operations involving the US and Israel against Iran. These strikes, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, provoked retaliatory actions from Iran, including attacks on Israel and US-aligned states in the Gulf region. This escalation has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and liquefied natural gas, contributing to a global fuel crisis.

Trump has called upon US allies to assist in reopening the strait. He has also issued warnings to Iran, stating that the US may target its energy infrastructure if access through the waterway is not restored. When questioned about the potential de-escalation of the conflict by the time of his scheduled visit, Leavitt commented, "we have always estimated approximately four to six weeks, so you can do the math on that."

The last presidential visit by a US leader to China occurred in November 2017 during Trump's first term. The most recent meeting between Trump and Xi took place in October at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in South Korea. The relationship between the two nations has historically faced challenges, including trade tensions, technological rivalry, and geopolitical disputes.

As Trump prepares for his trip, the Chinese state-run media has encouraged American officials to engage more with their Chinese counterparts. An editorial in the Global Times highlighted that the low frequency of exchanges between the two nations was "abnormal and should not be the case," emphasising that both countries benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation.

The dynamics of this upcoming meeting will be closely observed as a potential opportunity for easing tensions. Despite ongoing conflicts, the significance of such high-level discussions remains pivotal in shaping future relations between the United States and China.
