Dhurandhar Makes Strong Box Office Debut with ₹28 Crore Opening
Ranveer Singh's spy thriller Dhurandhar earns Rs28 crore on its first day, marking a successful start for the film directed by Aditya Dhar.

The action-spy thriller Dhurandhar, produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, has had a remarkable debut at the Indian box office, earning an estimated Rs28.60 crore on its opening day, December 5, 2025. This film, directed by Aditya Dhar, is notable for blending elements of espionage with gangster narratives, and it marks Ranveer Singh's first release of 2025 following his role in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again.

Dhurandhar represents a new collaboration between Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar, who gained recognition for directing the acclaimed film Uri: The Surgical Strike. In Dhurandhar, Singh portrays an Indian spy named Jaskeerat, who infiltrates the gangs of Lyari, a neighbourhood in Karachi, Pakistan, known for its criminal underworld. The film draws on real-life events and features notable characters, including Rehman Dakait, portrayed by Akshaye Khanna, and SP Chaudhary Aslam, played by Sanjay Dutt. The storyline presents a mix of fiction and historical references, aiming to create a gripping narrative.

In the film’s trailer, a key line delivered by R. Madhavan’s character, Ajay Sanyal, an Indian intelligence officer, states, "We must infiltrate the very core of terrorism in Pakistan," highlighting the film's intense themes.

The film has also introduced Sara Arjun in a significant role opposite Ranveer Singh, alongside a supporting cast that includes Arjun Rampal and Rajesh Bedi. Initial reviews have praised the film's ambitious scope and performances, particularly that of Akshaye Khanna. According to India Today, "Dhurandhar is a sprawling, muscular, politically sharp thriller that bites off a lot, and thanks to Khanna's explosive brilliance, chews most of it successfully."

Following its successful opening, early estimates indicate that the film's collection may surpass ₹50 crore by the end of its second day, buoyed by positive word of mouth among audiences. The film’s performance has defied initial predictions, placing it as one of the top openers of the year for Singh, outperforming previous films like Cirkus and Saiyaara. In fact, the film's opening day collection has already exceeded the lifetime earnings of Cirkus, which grossed around Rs35.80 crore in total.

Dhurandhar is set in the early 2000s and portrays a narrative rooted in significant historical events, including the Kandahar hijacking and the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Critics have pointed out that while the film seeks to entertain, it also carries a distinct political message, a common theme in Aditya Dhar’s works. The film, running for 215 minutes, has sparked discussions about its portrayal of sensitive issues and its cinematic approach to real-life incidents.

Despite mixed reviews from critics regarding its execution and messaging, the film's box office success indicates a strong appetite for action-thrillers within the Indian film industry. As audiences continue to respond positively, Dhurandhar appears poised to become a significant player in the 2025 box office landscape.

Dhurandhar is currently being screened in cinemas across India, and its success could set the stage for further developments in the ongoing narrative of Bollywood's action genre.
