Indian Abhay Kumar Singh Becomes Lawmaker in Russia's Kursk Region
Abhay Kumar Singh, a former medical student from Bihar, now serves as a lawmaker in Russia, bridging Indian and Russian political practices.

In a remarkable journey from Patna, India, to Kursk, Russia, Abhay Kumar Singh has become a notable figure in Russian politics. Born in Bihar, Singh moved to Russia in 1991 to study medicine at Kursk State Medical University. After completing his education, he returned briefly to India to practice as a doctor, but soon ventured back to Russia to establish a successful business in pharmaceuticals, later expanding into real estate and construction.

Singh's political career began in 2015 when he joined the United Russia party, the ruling political party led by President Vladimir Putin. His entry into politics was marked by his election to the Kursk city assembly in 2017, making him the first Indian-origin lawmaker in Russia. He successfully secured re-election in 2022, further solidifying his position in the local political landscape.

Just days before President Putin's upcoming state visit to India, Singh praised the Russian-made S-400 missile system, describing it as a 'very good missile system'. He also expressed interest in the advanced S-500 missile technology, which is currently exclusive to Russia. "If Russia decides to supply it to India, India will become the first country to receive it. Even China hasn't got this system," Singh noted during an interview.

Singh's approach to politics has been influenced by his roots in Indian culture. He has sought to introduce elements of Indian political engagement into the Russian system, where public interaction among lawmakers is less common. In his words, "We brought a tadka of Indian politics to the Russian elections. We held many public meetings and interacted with the local people. In return, they ensured I won with record numbers."

Despite facing challenges as a foreigner in Russia, Singh's determination and business acumen have earned him respect within the local community. His story highlights the growing opportunities for skilled workers from India in Russia, particularly as the demand for qualified personnel continues to rise across various sectors. Singh emphasised the workforce challenges in Russia, stating, "The shortage affects various sectors and skill tiers, and the need extends to both white-collar and blue-collar roles."

In the context of shifting global dynamics, Singh's position as a lawmaker in Russia underscores the potential for increased cooperation between India and Russia, particularly in the fields of defence and skilled labour. His experiences reflect the changing landscape for Indian expatriates in Russia, who are increasingly finding pathways to contribute to the local economy and society. As both countries navigate their geopolitical interests, Singh's dual identity as an Indian citizen and a Russian legislator offers a unique perspective on the evolving relationship between India and Russia.
