Croatia Secures Narrow Win Over Panama in World Cup Match
Ante Budimir's goal leads Croatia to a 1-0 victory over Panama, eliminating the Central American team from World Cup contention.

Croatia faced Panama in a crucial Group L clash on Tuesday at the Toronto Stadium, securing a tight 1-0 victory. The win effectively eliminated Panama from World Cup contention, leaving them without a point in their two tournaments.

Ante Budimir, who came on as a substitute in the second half, scored the only goal of the match in the 54th minute, marking his first goal in a FIFA World Cup and his fifth in competitive matches for his national team. The goal followed a well-executed play initiated by Josip Stanisic and Marco Pasalic, who set up a precise cross that Budimir confidently finished into an open net.

With this victory, Croatia moved to three points and remains in contention for one of the top two spots in the group. They are scheduled to face Ghana in their final group match on Saturday in Philadelphia. A win in that game would guarantee their progression to the knockout stages.

On the other hand, Panama continues to seek its first point in World Cup history. Having previously lost their opening match 1-0 to Ghana, they have struggled to make a significant impact in their two World Cup appearances. Despite missing their key player, Adalberto Carrasquilla, due to injury, they have shown some competitive spirit, with a goal difference that is an improvement compared to their debut in 2018.

The match was competitive, featuring opportunities for both teams. Shortly after Budimir's goal, Croatia captain Luka Modric found Pasalic in a promising position, but the Panamanian goalkeeper, Orlando Mosquera, made a crucial save. Panama responded with several attempts, forcing Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic into action multiple times, including an impressive stop against Carlos Harvey's header.

However, the tide turned after a hydration break that appeared to stifle Panama's momentum. In the closing stages, Croatia managed to maintain their advantage, ensuring their tactical approach was effective enough to secure the victory.

Panama will now look to disrupt England in their upcoming fixture on Saturday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Meanwhile, the draw between England and Ghana earlier in the day has set the stage for a thrilling final round of matches in Group L, with Croatia aiming high against Ghana for a spot in the knockout rounds.
