Caruana, Praggnanandhaa, and Sindarov Lead FIDE Candidates Round 1
Fabiano Caruana, R Praggnanandhaa, and Javokhir Sindarov secure early victories in the opening round of the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus.

The 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament commenced today at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Cyprus, featuring elite chess players competing for the chance to challenge for the World Championship title. The event consists of sixteen participants, including both the FIDE Candidates Tournament and the Women's Candidates Tournament.

In the opening round, the playing venue was filled to capacity with fans eager to witness the strategic battles. Anish Giri and Kateryna Lagno led the proceedings as the first official moves were made by Arkady Dvorkovich for Zhu Jiner and Criton Tornaritis for Fabiano Caruana.

Three contenders emerged victorious in their matches, establishing themselves as early frontrunners. The prominent players securing wins include Fabiano Caruana, R Praggnanandhaa, and Javokhir Sindarov. With three decisive victories in four games, the tournament is already attracting attention for its intense competition.

In a match that featured Fabiano Caruana against Hikaru Nakamura, Caruana capitalised on an oversight by his opponent in the latter stages of the opening. Despite Nakamura's resilient defence that created drawing opportunities, he ultimately had to concede, highlighting the high-level tactical play. Caruana remarked post-game, "I felt tired and somewhat embarrassed, but I am pleased with the result."

Javokhir Sindarov demonstrated strong strategy against Andrey Esipenko. Although Esipenko managed the opening well with black pieces, he faltered as time constraints loomed, leading to a decisive advantage for Sindarov. Sindarov said, "After I got my chances, I think I played well, and I handled the time trouble better."

R Praggnanandhaa surprised Anish Giri by opting for the Grand Prix Attack, an uncommon choice in such a competitive environment. His rapid play caught Giri off guard, and despite initially managing the opening, Giri acknowledged his position became less favourable after a blunder. Praggnanandhaa effectively converted his advantage, showcasing his excellent endgame technique.

The fourth match, involving Matthias Bluebaum and Wei Yi, ended in a draw after a solid performance from both players. Wei Yi admitted to being caught off-guard by Bluebaum's 10.Bb5, indicating the challenges posed by high-level competition.

In the Women’s Candidates Tournament, all four games concluded in draws, reflecting the closely matched capabilities of the participants. In a notable encounter, Divya Deshmukh introduced a surprising idea in the Scotch Opening, but ultimately could not secure a win.

Anna Muzychuk, who stepped in after Humpy Koneru's last-minute withdrawal from the tournament, spent considerable time navigating the opening phase, resulting in a draw against her opponent.

Zhu Jiner instigated a provocative pawn sacrifice against Tan Zhongyi, but despite the pressure, the former World Champion managed to defend effectively, resulting in another draw.

The excitement in the venue extended beyond the matches themselves, with a fan zone hosting events such as a lecture by former five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand and an engaging masterclass for children led by former Women's World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk.
