Bihar Chief Minister: Samrat Choudhary Set for Oath
Samrat Choudhary will be sworn in as Bihar Chief Minister after being elected BJP legislature party leader following Nitish Kumar’s resignation.

Indian politician Samrat Choudhary is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, following his unanimous election as leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party and the resignation of Nitish Kumar.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place in the state capital, Patna, marking a significant political shift in Bihar, where the BJP will lead the government under its own chief minister for the first time.

According to official statements, Samrat Choudhary met Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to formally stake his claim to form the government after being chosen as leader by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislators.

The development follows the resignation of Nitish Kumar, who has moved to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament. His departure ends a long tenure marked by shifting alliances and a dominant presence in the state’s politics.

Leadership Transition in Bihar

The decision to appoint Mr Choudhary was taken during a meeting of BJP legislators in Patna. Senior leader Vijay Kumar Sinha proposed his name, which was supported by Dilip Jaiswal. The announcement was later confirmed by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who attended the meeting as a central observer.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Choudhary said he would carry out his responsibilities “with utmost integrity” and described the new role as an opportunity to serve the people of Bihar and fulfil their expectations.

The BJP currently holds the largest number of seats in the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly, giving it a strong position within the ruling alliance.

First BJP Chief Minister in Bihar

Mr Choudhary’s appointment is notable as it marks the first time the BJP will have its own chief minister in Bihar, despite being a long-time coalition partner in the state. Analysts say this reflects the party’s growing political strength and organisational presence in the region.

The new administration is expected to function as part of the NDA alliance, which includes the Janata Dal (United), even as leadership has shifted to the BJP.

Political Background and Rise

Mr Choudhary, aged 57, represents the Tarapur constituency and has had a varied political career spanning multiple parties. He began his journey with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in the 1990s before later joining the Janata Dal (United) and eventually the BJP in 2017.

He rose through the ranks to become the BJP’s state unit president and later served as Deputy Chief Minister. His political positioning has often focused on caste dynamics in Bihar, particularly among Other Backward Classes (OBCs), a key electoral group in the state.

His leadership selection is also seen as part of a broader strategy to consolidate support among influential communities.

Symbolism and Political Messaging

Mr Choudhary has drawn attention in recent years for symbolic gestures, including wearing a saffron turban as a sign of political resolve during a period of shifting alliances in Bihar. He later removed the turban after political realignments brought the BJP back into power alongside its allies.

While some opposition leaders have raised concerns over past allegations linked to his political career, his supporters have dismissed these as politically motivated.

Context: Bihar’s Changing Political Landscape

Bihar, one of India’s most populous states, has experienced frequent political realignments over the past decade. Nitish Kumar, who has served multiple terms as chief minister, has alternated between alliances with the BJP and opposition parties.

His resignation and transition to a national parliamentary role signal a new phase in the state’s leadership.

Mr Choudhary’s appointment may indicate a shift towards a more assertive role for the BJP in Bihar’s governance, as the party seeks to expand its influence in key states ahead of future elections. The swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday is expected to formalise this transition, ushering in a new leadership structure in Bihar’s political landscape.
