Modi–Trump Call: Leaders Discuss Iran Tensions, Hormuz Security
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump held a 40-minute phone conversation on Tuesday, focusing on rising tensions in West Asia, including the situation involving Iran, and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
The discussion comes amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty following stalled peace talks between the United States and Iran, as well as concerns over the security of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
According to a statement shared by Narendra Modi on social media platform X, the two leaders reviewed “substantial progress” in cooperation across multiple sectors. He added that both countries remain committed to deepening their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The Indian prime minister also confirmed that the leaders discussed the situation in West Asia, emphasising the need to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and secure. This narrow maritime passage, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, handling a significant share of global energy supplies.
Focus on Strait of Hormuz
The conversation took place shortly after Donald Trump ordered a blockade targeting vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas in the Gulf. The move followed the collapse of recent diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
US officials have warned that any attempts by Iranian forces to challenge the blockade could be met with military action. The situation has raised concerns among global markets and governments, given the potential disruption to energy supplies.
According to Sergio Gor, the two leaders exchanged views on the evolving situation and underscored the importance of maintaining stability in the region. He added that the call concluded with President Trump expressing personal appreciation towards Prime Minister Modi, saying, “I just want you to know we all love you.”
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
Beyond security concerns, the leaders also discussed ongoing cooperation between India and the United States across sectors such as trade and energy. Officials indicated that several major agreements could be finalised in the coming weeks, reflecting the growing economic partnership between the two countries.
This was the third conversation between the two leaders in 2026. Their earlier discussions included progress on a bilateral trade agreement in February and a review of regional security issues in March.
Background: US–Iran Tensions
The latest exchange follows unsuccessful negotiations between US and Iranian representatives held in Islamabad, Pakistan, over the past weekend. The talks ended without a breakthrough, leaving both sides at an impasse.
While a temporary truce is reportedly in place until later this month, the broader conflict remains unresolved. Analysts say the situation remains fragile, with risks of escalation if diplomatic efforts continue to stall.
Wider Implications
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to global economic stability, as disruptions in the region can significantly impact oil prices and international trade. India, as one of the world’s largest energy importers, has a direct interest in ensuring the uninterrupted flow of oil through this route. The call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump highlights the growing coordination between New Delhi and Washington on both strategic and economic fronts, particularly in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
