Bangladeshi Priest Hospitalised Following Alleged Torture Incident
A 25-year-old Hindu priest from Bangladesh has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital following allegations of torture and extortion. According to family members, the individual, who is also a student at Dhaka Central Law College, was held captive overnight and assaulted by unidentified individuals.
Subhash Deuri, who assists at the central temple of Jagannath University, was found injured in the Narinda area of Dhaka. His sister, Jaya, reported that he was forced to demand money from relatives while being threatened. He was robbed of all his belongings and suffered severe injuries to his head, hands, and legs.
Friend and roommate, Durjoy Saha, recounted returning home late on the night of the incident and receiving a call from Subhash asking for money. Saha was unable to assist financially at that time. He later discovered Subhash on the road in a severely injured state early the next morning.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of violence against members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh. Recent months have seen several cases of assaults on priests and caretakers. In April, a temple caretaker named Nayan Sadhu was found dead after going missing for three days. His body was discovered hanging from a tree in Chhattogram district.
Additionally, in the same month, another spiritual leader, Shamim Reza Jahangir, was killed by a mob after inflammatory remarks attributed to him surfaced online. Such incidents have raised concerns about the safety and rights of religious minorities in the country.
As Bangladesh continues to grapple with these challenges, community leaders and advocacy groups are calling for enhanced measures to protect vulnerable populations within the nation. The ongoing situation highlights the need for improved safety and dialogue among various religious communities. It remains to be seen how local authorities will respond to these incidents and what steps will be taken to prevent further violence.
