Former Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sachin Ahir switches loyalty to Eknath Shinde, filing his nomination for Deputy Chairperson of Maharashtra Legislative Council.

In a significant political realignment in Maharashtra, Sachin Ahir, a former member of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), has officially joined the faction led by Eknath Shinde. On June 30, 2026, Ahir filed his nomination for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council as the candidate representing the Shinde faction.

Ahir's move is seen as a setback for Uddhav Thackeray, coming just a week after several Members of Parliament (MPs) from his party also switched allegiance to Shinde. Being a close ally of Aaditya Thackeray, Uddhav's son, Ahir has long been regarded as a significant player within the Shiv Sena.

The nomination was filed at the Vidhan Bhavan complex in Mumbai, attended by prominent leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. Eknath Shinde commented on Ahir's status, asserting that the latter's official affiliation remains with the Shiv Sena, stating that there is no question of disqualification as he was elected under the party symbol of the bow and arrow in 2022.

Ahir has attempted to downplay the seriousness of any rift, expressing no grievances towards the Thackeray family. He indicated a readiness to fulfil any responsibilities allotted by Shinde, while refraining from criticising Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray. His political journey began in 2019 when he transitioned from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to the Shiv Sena and has since held various significant roles, including that of a Deputy Leader within the party.

Despite the political upheaval, Aaditya Thackeray responded to Ahir's departure by insisting it would not deplete the party's core strength, particularly in regions like Worli, which he represents. He characterised the ongoing political strategy of the Shinde faction as an attempt to undermine the party in light of the 2029 elections.

Uddhav Thackeray has previously voiced concerns regarding Eknath Shinde's tactics, which he believes are designed to diminish the influence of BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis. In the background of these events, political analysts suggest that other members may contemplate similar switches, raising the stakes within Maharashtra's political landscape.

Sachin Ahir had previously been instrumental in securing key victories for the Thackeray family, especially in the Worli constituency. His influence extended beyond mere electoral politics, as he has been actively involved in Mumbai's union politics, further amplifying his role within the Shiv Sena fabric.

The political climate continues to shift in Maharashtra, with many watching closely whether more members will follow suit and what this means for the future of Shiv Sena (UBT) and its leadership dynamics.
