AR Rahman Ready to Move On from Chhaava Controversy
Music composer A.R. Rahman has expressed his readiness to move forward from the recent controversy surrounding his comments on Chhaava and communalism in Bollywood. Speaking during a conversation with Noise and Grains, the organisers of his upcoming Wonderment Tour in Chennai, Rahman remarked that people often do not listen, even when explanations are provided.
In response to a question from singer-comedian Alexander Babu about his recent statement aimed at clarifying his position, Rahman reflected cryptically, stating, "See, in life you have to prepare. And we have to prepare for everything." He then smiled, suggesting a desire to change the topic, indicating that the audience was already familiar with the background of the situation.
When Babu mentioned feeling saddened by Rahman's need to justify his accomplishments and patriotism, Rahman replied, "But you know what, itâs better we move on with something else because people who know you donât need an explanation. And when you explain, they wonât listen to you, those who donât...".
The controversy erupted after Rahmanâs comments were interpreted as potentially divisive, leading to backlash from various sections of the public. In response to this criticism, he released a video statement, asserting, "Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating, and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour, and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt."
In a separate interview with BBC Asian Network, Rahman was asked whether he has ever experienced prejudice as a Tamil composer in Bollywood. He replied, "Maybe I never got to know of this, maybe it was concealed by God, but I didnât feel any of this." He noted a perceived shift in power dynamics within the industry, suggesting that those lacking creative experience now hold influence.
The musician also critiqued Chhaava for exploiting divisiveness, further complicating his earlier comments that ignited debate. Nevertheless, Rahman appears committed to focusing on his artistic pursuits.
The upcoming Wonderment Tour in Chennai is scheduled for February 14 at the Nehru Outdoor Stadium, with tickets priced from âč4,000 to âč28,000. This performance marks an opportunity for fans to engage with Rahmanâs celebrated music amid the surrounding controversy.
