Apple's Holiday Short Film Showcases iPhone 17 Pro's Features
Apple unveils 'A Critter Carol', a holiday film shot entirely on the iPhone 17 Pro, highlighting its advanced camera capabilities.

Apple Inc. has launched its annual holiday film, titled 'A Critter Carol', which was filmed exclusively using the iPhone 17 Pro. The short film tells the story of a group of woodland animals that form an unexpected friendship after a hiker accidentally leaves his phone behind in the forest.

This production is designed to demonstrate the advanced photographic capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro, including features such as the new 8x zoom, Center Stage selfies, and Dual Capture. Director Mark Molloy expressed his surprise at the device's power, stating, "I was surprised by the power of the iPhone 17 Pro because it allowed me to capture the story in a truly immersive way. It even lets me put the iPhone in the puppets' hands."

The film likely utilised the iPhone 17 Pro's ProRes RAW recording feature, which provides enhanced flexibility regarding white balance, exposure, and noise reduction during post-production. Shooting in ProRes RAW allows filmmakers to capture in Open Gate mode, which takes advantage of the full 4:3 aspect ratio of the sensors for higher resolution imagery.

Behind-the-scenes footage indicates that the entire film was produced within a studio setting, featuring nine handcrafted puppets designed specifically for the narrative. Mark Molloy further elaborated, "I wanted to embrace the tactile nature of puppetry. I was really keen to go back to craftsmanship."

In a memorable scene, a raccoon discovers the iPhone 17 Pro, places it on a log, and begins singing a version of 'Friends' by the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords. The performance is interrupted by the hiker who uses the 'Find My' feature on his device, leading him to locate the phone in the snow, where he also discovers the film created by the woodland characters.

Apple's press release noted, "The creative choice to feature handmade puppets reinforces Apple’s commitment to craft and underscores the irreplaceable value of human creativity." Additionally, the typography featured throughout the promotional campaign was meticulously handprinted from wood blocks, which aligns with the film's themes of friendship and individuality among the characters.

Apple's dedication to craftsmanship is further reflected in the new mnemonic for Apple TV, which precedes the streaming of shows. This animated logo was produced in a studio using innovative lighting techniques, macro lenses, and colour gels, showcasing the company's commitment to blending technology with traditional artistry.
