West Bengal Elections: BJP and CPI(M) Challenge Trinamool Congress
West Bengal is poised for the second phase of its assembly elections, scheduled for April 29, covering 142 constituencies. Significant political upheavals are unfolding as heavyweight members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and new entrants from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) face off against candidates from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata and surrounding districts.
The Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal and seasoned BJP figure, Suvendu Adhikari, is contesting the Bhabanipur seat, a constituency held by TMC Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari has publicly committed to defeating Banerjee in what is viewed as her political stronghold.
The upcoming assembly elections are critical for all major political parties involved. The TMC has dominated West Bengal's political landscape for more than a decade, but recent activities suggest that both the BJP and CPI(M) are aiming to disrupt this trend.
At the forefront of the CPI(M) campaign is Shrijeeb Biswas, who is challenging Banerjee for the same Bhabanipur seat. The active involvement of young CPI(M) representatives marks a strategic shift aimed at energising the party's base amid significant electoral competition.
This election phase comes on the heels of the first round of voting on April 23, where a remarkable voter turnout of 92.35% was recorded across West Bengal. The excitement surrounding the events is palpable, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing optimism about the BJP's prospects in a recent rally, confidently asserting that the lotus will ‘surely bloom’ in Bengal.
In contrast, TMC leaders, including State General Secretary Tanmay Ghosh, have intensified their rhetoric against the BJP, signalling a heated contest. Ghosh stated that, following the results announcement on May 4, no BJP leaders will be allowed within the state.
As tensions rise, clashes between BJP and TMC supporters have erupted in the North 24 Parganas district, reportedly triggered by the destruction of political paraphernalia related to PM Modi's visit.
BJP leaders have acknowledged the role of the Election Commission in maintaining order during the election, receiving commendations for managing the voting process effectively despite isolated incidents of unrest.
Voters in West Bengal are facing a crucial decision as multiple parties vie for influence through promises addressing issues like employment, corruption, and governance. With campaigning concluding soon, the outlook for the political landscape in West Bengal remains dynamic and unpredictable as both main adversaries gear up for this pivotal phase.
