India and New Zealand Finalise Free Trade Agreement
India and New Zealand have officially signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in New Delhi on April 27, 2026, a move described as a 'historic' development by the respective Prime Ministers of the two countries. The agreement was formalised by Indian Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay.
Under the new FTA, New Zealand will abolish all tariffs on goods imported from India. In reciprocation, India will either eliminate or significantly reduce tariffs on 95% of its current imports from New Zealand. This initiative is expected to bolster trade relations between the two nations and facilitate increased investment and cultural exchanges.
The newly signed agreement is anticipated to create numerous opportunities for businesses in both countries, strengthening economic ties that have been growing over the years. With New Zealand's commitment to removing tariffs, Indian exporters might find new markets for their goods, while New Zealand stands to gain access to a broader array of products from India.
As global trade dynamics continue to evolve, both nations view this agreement as a crucial step towards diversification of market access and economic cooperation. The collaboration aims to not only enhance bilateral trade but also promote a deeper understanding and connection between the peoples of India and New Zealand.
Trade officials from both nations expect that the implementation of the FTA will encourage further dialogue and collaboration on various sectors, including technology, agriculture, and services, paving the way for a long-lasting economic partnership. The signing of this agreement marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic and economic relationships between India and New Zealand, reflecting their shared commitment to fostering international trade and investment in the region.
