Virat Kohli aims for Sachin Tendulkar's and Ricky Ponting's ODI records in the upcoming series against New Zealand starting November 4.

Virat Kohli is on the brink of two significant batting achievements as India prepares to face New Zealand in a five-match One-Day International (ODI) series commencing on November 4. The celebrated former captain is closing in on Sachin Tendulkar’s and Ricky Ponting’s record milestones.

Kohli has amassed a remarkable total of 3,167 international runs in 60 matches against New Zealand, which includes 10 centuries and 16 half-centuries. He currently trails Sachin Tendulkar, who leads with 3,345 runs scored in 66 matches, by 178 runs. The second position is held by England's Joe Root with 3,268 runs from 56 matches, while Ponting and South Africa's Jacques Kallis complete the top five.

In the ODI format specifically, Kohli has achieved 1,897 runs over 36 matches against the Kiwis, maintaining an impressive average of 57.48, alongside seven centuries and 10 half-centuries. To surpass Ricky Ponting, he needs just 74 runs; Ponting has an ODI record of 1,971 runs against New Zealand from 51 matches.

Furthermore, Kohli is also aiming to become the first player to score 2,000 runs in ODIs against New Zealand, requiring 103 more runs to achieve this feat. Tendulkar, who is third on the list, has 1,750 runs in 42 matches, followed by Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Kohli enters the series riding a wave of confidence from his impressive form throughout 2026, having scored 552 runs in nine ODI innings this year at an average of 69, which includes two centuries and three half-centuries. His highest score of 139 not out came in a match against the West Indies.

Earlier this year, during a three-match home series against New Zealand, Kohli scored 93, 23, and 124 runs, with the 124 in Indore highlighting his ability to make substantial contributions against the Black Caps.

In New Zealand, Kohli has recorded 596 runs across 13 ODIs, with an average of 49.66, which features one century and four half-centuries. This series presents a prime opportunity for him to enhance his record while gearing up for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Kohli's pursuit of these records not only stands as a personal goal but also reflects his commitment to enhancing India's competitive edge in international cricket as they prepare for significant tournaments ahead.
