Melbourne Renegades Secure Dramatic Win Over Hobart Hurricanes
The Melbourne Renegades claim a thrilling victory against the Hobart Hurricanes in a dramatic finale at Bellerive Oval.

The Melbourne Renegades overcame the Hobart Hurricanes in a dramatic encounter, winning by four wickets in the Weber Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL|12). The match, played at Bellerive Oval, saw a rare cricket rule come into play, significantly impacting the game’s outcome.

With one delivery remaining, the teams were tied at 154 runs. Deandra Dottin of the Renegades faced the final ball but missed it, with wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee positioned in front of the stumps to catch the ball. Initially, players anticipated a Super Over to determine the winner. However, replays revealed that Lee had captured the ball just in front of the stumps, resulting in a no ball decision and handing the Renegades the victory.

Hobart Hurricanes captain Nicola Carey was the standout performer for her team, scoring 62 runs off 43 balls in her 150th WBBL match. The Hurricanes managed to post a total of 154 runs for seven wickets in their innings. Despite this, the Renegades' captain, Sophie Molineux, made a significant impact in bowling, taking four wickets for 22 runs and reaching a milestone of 101 career wickets in WBBL, joining fellow player Molly Strano as one of the two Renegades women to surpass the 100 wickets mark.

The Renegades began their chase positively, with opener Hayley Matthews scoring 59 runs from 44 deliveries. At one point, they were comfortably placed at 101 runs for one wicket by the 13th over. However, they faced a sudden collapse, losing five wickets for just 37 runs, which set the stage for a nail-biting finish.

The game saw further drama when the Hurricanes were penalised for not completing their overs in the specified time, resulting in a fielding restriction that allowed only two players outside the circle for the final deliveries. This decision proved crucial as the Renegades edged closer to their target.

As the match reached its climax, 33 runs were needed off the last four overs. The Renegades capitalised on the Power Surge to reduce the target further. With only five runs required from the last three balls, a dramatic turn of events unfolded, culminating in the no ball decision that sealed an exciting first win for the Renegades in the current season.

The Hurricanes remain at the bottom of the WBBL standings without a win after three matches, and they are facing potential issues with injuries, particularly concerning West Indian player Chinelle Henry. Henry contributed a quick 36 runs but had to leave the field with a suspected hip injury after bowling just one over for 14 runs.

The match exemplified the thrilling unpredictability that the WBBL can deliver, showcasing both remarkable individual performances and extraordinary twists that defined the outcome.
