Kareena Kapoor Calls Herself the 'Poster Girl' of Nepotism Talent
Kareena Kapoor Khan, a prominent figure in Bollywood, recently appeared on the ninth season of the talk show 'Koffee With Karan,' hosted by Karan Johar, along with her husband, Saif Ali Khan. The actress, who debuted in the film industry with 'Refugee' on June 30, 2000, has enjoyed a successful career spanning over two decades, showcasing her versatility through various roles across multiple genres.
During the episode, discussions turned to the topic of nepotism, a significant issue within the Indian film industry. Kareena, who belongs to the renowned Kapoor family of actors, which includes her grandfather Raj Kapoor and her parents Randhir Kapoor and Babita, has often been labelled a ‘nepo baby.’ However, she firmly rejected this notion.
While engaging in a light-hearted exchange, Saif Ali Khan jested that his victory in a fun segment on the show indicated that Karan Johar's platform was not biased towards nepotism. Kareena, taken aback by this comment, questioned his assertion. Karan Johar playfully pointed to her, reinforcing the ‘nepo baby’ tag. In response, Kareena stated, “I am the poster girl for being the purest talent of nepotism. The purest, organic talent! Maine kabhi apne maa baap ka naam nahi liya hai (I have never taken the names of my parents)!” Karan responded enthusiastically, exclaiming ‘waah!’ as they both applauded her remark.
In previous discussions, Kareena has expressed her views on the subject of nepotism in the industry. In a conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt in 2020, she stated, “21 years of working would not have happened with just nepotism. It is not possible.” Kareena mentioned that her journey involved hard work, asserting that she cannot downplay her effort simply because of her lineage. She added, “It might sound weird but my struggle is there. There is a struggle but it probably is not as interesting as somebody who comes in a train with just ₹10 in his pocket. Yeah, it’s not been that and I can’t be apologetic about it.”
Kareena also acknowledged that actors from film backgrounds work diligently, just as those from outside the industry do. She pointed out that numerous successful stars, including Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan, have successfully navigated their careers as outsiders, while also underscoring the efforts of her own circle, stating that the audience ultimately decides the success of any actor.
The actress was last seen in 'Daayra,' directed by Meghna Gulzar, which failed to perform well at the box office.
