Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodriguez Embarks on India Visit
Delcy Rodriguez, the Acting President of Venezuela, is scheduled to visit India from June 3 to June 7, 2026. This visit, announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), comes approximately five months after President Nicolas Maduro's dramatic abduction by US military forces.
Rodriguez, who was previously set to attend the International Big Cats Alliance summit on June 1, will instead undertake a working visit, according to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. She will be accompanied by several Venezuelan ministers, including those for foreign affairs, finance, science and technology, communication, and transportation.
During her stay, Rodriguez is expected to engage in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on a comprehensive array of topics surrounding India-Venezuela relations. These discussions will explore potential collaborations in areas such as energy, trade, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy sources.
This marks Rodriguez's sixth visit to India, having previously been in the country representing the Maduro government in various official capacities since 2015. In addition to New Delhi, she will also visit spiritual centres linked to the Satya Sai Baba movement and meet with representatives from the oil and gas industries.
India has recently become the second-largest importer of Venezuelan oil, following the United States. In recent months, India has increased its purchasing rate to 427,000 barrels per day, as reported by Reuters. The ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving the United States, Iran, and Israel, have prompted India to diversify its energy imports.
The development comes amidst a global energy crisis exacerbated by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, leading India to seek alternatives for its energy needs. As per the MEA's earlier statements, the Indian government emphasises the importance of energy security for its population of 1.4 billion.
Rodriguez’s trip is being closely monitored by the United States, as it navigates its complex relationship with Venezuela following the recent changes in leadership. The US has previously recommended that India pivot its oil purchasing strategy to include Venezuelan supplies instead of Iranian oil, signalling a shift in regional energy dynamics.
The outcome of these discussions is anticipated to have significant implications for the future of economic ties and energy security between India and Venezuela.
