D.K. Shivakumar Set to Become Chief Minister of Karnataka
D.K. Shivakumar is poised to assume the role of Chief Minister of Karnataka on June 3, 2026, marking a significant leadership transition.

D.K. Shivakumar, an eight-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Karnataka, is scheduled to take office as the state’s Chief Minister on June 3, 2026. His appointment follows several months of negotiations concerning leadership within the Congress party in Karnataka.

Nicknamed ‘DKShi’, D.K. Shivakumar is recognised as one of the most influential leaders in his party and among the wealthiest politicians in the region. At 64 years of age, he has been at the helm of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) since 2020. His dual approach, combining strong connections in New Delhi with solid grassroots support, has been instrumental in his political ascent.

Mr. Shivakumar’s wealth is attributed to family assets estimated at over ₹1,400 crore, accrued through diverse investments in educational institutions and various business ventures since his entry into the legislative assembly in 1989. He is often referred to as ‘Kanakapura Bande’ or ‘Rock of Kanakapura’, a moniker reflecting his robust political character and his resilience against scrutiny from central investigative bodies.

His political trajectory includes numerous noteworthy moments. D.K. Shivakumar played a pivotal role during several legislative sessions, making headlines with his involvement in various protests and movements aimed at addressing local and state issues. His leadership has extended beyond politics, as he has consistently sought to engage with the community through grassroots initiatives.

As he steps into this prominent position, his supporters remain optimistic about his ability to navigate the complex political landscape in Karnataka. The upcoming changes in leadership are anticipated to bring about shifts in policy and governance as he implements his vision for the state.

In recent years, D.K. Shivakumar has emerged as a principal strategist for the Congress party in South India, demonstrating his capability to respond to challenges effectively. His decisions and actions will likely be closely scrutinised by both supporters and critics as he assumes the Chief Minister's role in Karnataka.
