I.N.D.I.A Bloc to Discuss Strategy Ahead of Key Legislative Challenges
The I.N.D.I.A bloc, a coalition of opposition parties in India, is anticipated to hold a significant meeting on June 8. This gathering will mark their first assembly since the exit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from the coalition. The agenda is expected to cover political developments in the aftermath of the Assembly elections, where regional parties, including the Trinamool Congress and DMK, faced setbacks while the Indian National Congress achieved victories in Kerala.
Sources suggest that the meeting aims to bolster the opposition's unified stance against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, which is actively seeking to expand its influence. Internal rifts within the I.N.D.I.A bloc have come to light following the DMK's departure, which occurred after the Congress decided to support the Tamil Nadu-based Television News Network (TVK).
No formal announcement regarding the meeting has been made. However, opposition leaders have indicated that informal discussions are underway to finalise the schedule. "It is in the air. There is no direct communication about the meeting," stated a senior leader involved in the planning. While the Congress party has yet to initiate outreach efforts, leaders from the Trinamool Congress have reportedly engaged in conversations about the upcoming meeting.
The Congress leadership is currently occupied with discussions related to the formation of a new Cabinet in Karnataka, where recent changes have been implemented. This situation raises questions about the potential participation of the TVK in the upcoming meeting.
Historically, while the I.N.D.I.A bloc's floor leaders have maintained regular meetings during parliamentary sessions, the last time top leaders convened was prior to a special parliamentary session in April to strategise against the BJP concerning the delimitation bill. A separate meeting was held shortly after the Lok Sabha elections on June 1, 2024. Notably, the last large summit-style meeting of the I.N.D.I.A bloc occurred in December 2023, with an online meeting taking place in January 2024.
Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, has previously called for a meeting within the first week of June, highlighting the need for unity following significant electoral challenges in West Bengal. The Trinamool, recovering from these defeats and facing internal disturbances, is advocating for the Congress to lead the campaign against alleged electoral malpractice, referred to as 'vote-chori'.
As the Modi government gears up for renewed efforts to pass the controversial Delimitation Bill, which necessitates constitutional amendments, the opposition must work together to replicate the voting dynamics from April, during which the ruling party lacked the necessary two-thirds majority for passage. The Congress and the I.N.D.I.A bloc face a difficult task in maintaining unity amidst the discontent among DMK leaders and ongoing attempts by the BJP to attract Trinamool MPs in the Lok Sabha.
